I don't know if it can be done. But, it's gonna be pricey if you can...

They are the same tails...
I assume you mean the '09 tails?
You will need a new bumber...It will not be cheap.

They said it would work but you would need a new bumper according to dirt nasty, I would assume an 09+ bumper. Then you would have to get it painted your color. Its not just gonna be the cost of the tails.

Another thing to consider is if you get a 09+ bumper your exhaust might need some bending or shaping. I dont know if its the mounting of the exhaust or how far the bumper hangs down but I do know s1 exhausts wont fit an s2 car. I might be wrong and its not the bumper that causes this, but if it is thats another expense.

This is all under the assumption that they actually meant 09 tail lights not 08.

Like what the others have said, the 09 tail lights will not fit on your 05 unless you get a new bumper. they are 04-08 tail lights are slightly different from the 09 and up.

After reading your problem, I could suggest only one thing buy a new bumper which is in synchronous with the lights and that will solve your problem.
