According to Mazda the burn marks are irrelevant. Check this out for the actual test procedure:

Yea 280 sounds very low. I usually get at least 340 when the light comes on. What rpm do you usually shift at? It shouldn't be that low unless you're redlining every shift.

I was getting about 13.5 mpg with bad coils (really bad coils)mostly city driving. Now with those fixed I am getting a little under 17mpg mostly city.

Usually shift around 4000; has a shift buzzer that sounds of at 5k. Will take it in to the shop for a look at the coils. Thanks y'all!!! ...Leslie

also struggling with MPG

I bought my car about a year ago (2009 Manual trans, 66,000 miles). I have been keeping very precise records of the mpgs and they have been very consistent (best 15.79 mpg, worst 13.65 and average 14.87). Most of that has been city driving but the best mpg mentioned above was all highway and still I could not clear 16 mpg. This seems very bad when I compare to other RX-8s on fuelly.com
The car seems to have full power and revs easily to 9000 rpm redline. I have changed spark plugs, ignition coil, air filter, none of which had any impact on MPGs. Any other suggestions beyond mas air flow and cat?

So since my last post the situation has changed dramatically.
I changed coils and air filters and continued to get the same mpgs (+/-15 mpg) during city driving. This went on for two full tanks, all of which was city driving. Then I went on a weekend trip and drove 200 mile on the highway. I got 17 mpg for that trip, which, not great for this car, but better than I have ever seen for the car since I bought it. Then weirdly enough the next tank of gas, all of which was city driving, I got 17 mpg again. Then I did another long road trip and got 22 mpg.
Does the computer and or engine need some time after a coil and/or air filter change to adjust? Anyone else seen this kind of delayed change?

That's a nice improvement and more in-line with typical MPG. While it's probably not the whole answer, the short answer is yes. Did you pull the negative battery terminal when you were doing the coils? You should for safety and because it resets the ECU.

So what are your driving habits like to get that kind of mileage?

wanklebolt, yes, I did remove the negative cable during the coil replacement, so that should have reset the computer at that point.
Ivan2terrible, how many gallons are you putting in after 520km? Unless you are running the tank dry, that seems like unbelievable mpgs.

its has to do with the traffic i have to follow to work, i suppose.. i never get past 120km/hr, always in the 115km/hr, and constantly have a vehicle in front of me.. i never change @ high rev, when on road is clear, i push to 6000rpm, in between the morn or evening on my way home

Amateurs.

I was still running and made it to the gas station. IIRC put in 13.something gallons. Done this more than once.
