Haven't done it because I have not actually "installed" the spare tire yet. Right now it's just sitting in the trunk rattling around because it is too cold to work on the car. Come spring, I will install the tire bracket, and add another light. Most likely I will get another stock mazda lamp, cut into the liner of the trunk and wire it into the existing lamp, however all of that is speculation as I have yet to open the thing up to see what I have. No matter what it shouldn't be a problem.

Well, I installed an additional lamp in my trunk (opposite location from the stock) since I also have a spare tire just in case if I can’t repair a fat because a hole in side walls (too much crap on the road). Anyway, I started by getting an interior/utility light from an auto or truck part store (see picture). Since I didn’t wanted to drill the frame so I made a backing plate out of plastic so that I can use a high strength double side tape. I first wanted to replace my rear speaker but I decided not to…
By the way if you cut and splice the wires from the trunk DON’T DO IT ! because there are two hot wires (blue with red) and a ground (brown). I didn't know which one so I took one I made that mistake and extra light remains on after you close the trunk Once you remove the rear speaker panels( see DIY How to replace rear 6x9 speakers )
you will have to remove the center panel as well to have access to the wires. The center panel has those same hard to remove metal clips so be careful (I screw up a bit trying to do it)
Once you have access to the center panel you will see that one of “hot wires goes to a square sensor??? Anyway, you cut and splice the ones that go to the light bulb. Remember do the splicing with the truck close. I accidentally touched the chassis and blew the 15 amps interior fuse located in the driver side fuse block because the wire was hot. I started to panic because I had no power door locks and my radio went dead and my trip meter went to zero. Once I found out what happened I replace the fuse and everything is ok.
After testing the additional light to make sure it turns off after you close the trunk (you can see it from the rear access console) I rerouted the wires behind the Bose amplifier and attached the light near the passenger rear speaker.
Anyway, now at night I can see all the truck with my spare tire installed.
The moral of the story is….If you have time and not afraid to mess around your “baby” go ahead. If you don’t want to do it but still want to have more light in you truck, keep a small flashlight handy or one of those push-on dome light that you can get at Target or Walmart. I Personally don’t recommend it since I went to a lot of pain to do it.
P.S. Sorry I don’t have pictures, my camera went sour on me.
