I think I may pull the trigger... some input please?

Hi everyone. Great forum here, tons of solid info. Here we go with my virgin post:

I have had an interest in the RX-8 for years. I test drove an R3 last year and loved it, but it just wasn't the right time for me to buy. I am ready to make a move and think I have found a potential contender. Last week I went and drove an '11 GT just to refresh my memory. Yep, I still want one.

The car I am interested in is a 2007 GT M6. The car is being sold by the original owner and has 30K miles. I have chatted with the owner a few times. He has not done the plugs/coils/wires. If I were to buy I would likely do these right away. He tells me that it has been trouble free as long as he has owned it, and has been good about oil changes every 3K miles (they all say that, don't they). He also brought up the fact that he was instructed when he bought it new to never shut the car off cold as flooding could result. Thus, he says it has never flooded. He has never had a compression check done.

Wanting to learn a little more, I went to my local Mazda dealer and asked if I gave them the VIN if they could pull up the warranty vehicle report. They were more than happy to. The service manager printed off a copy and let me take the report.

Assembly date: 7/12/2006 as a MY2007.

Here is what the warranty history states:

-At 6mi: Qty 1, description, 'CAP, FUEL'
-At 1344mi: description, 'WARR-EGI'
-At 2903mi: Qty 1, description 'SPARK PLUG SET '06 /NLA2'
-At 2903mi: Qty 1, description 'BATTERY'
-At 2980mi: Qty 1, description 'FUSE'
-At 3344mi: description, 'WARR-EGI'

And that's it. Can anyone help translate some of this?

This is what is listed under recalls:

-Fuel filler cap: status, CLOSED
-04-08 RX8 engine lack of power: status, OPEN
-Rotary engine core warranty 96/100K: status, WARR EXT
-RX8 clutch pedal warranty ext.: status, WARR-EXT

One comment I would like to make regarding the engine core 96/100K warranty; the start date listed is, 5/30/2008. So, does this mean that the clock on the 8-years didn't start until that date? If so that is awesome. I was under the impression from reading around here that the 8-years started on the original warranty start date when the vehicle was purchased new. Can anyone confirm this?

Sorry for the lengthy first post, but any insight/input/advice/etc. any of you good people could offer would be most appreciated.

Regards,

Corso

The warranty starts from the original date of purchase, you are correct in that. It is actually possible that your car sat around at the dealer for over a year of test drives(yikes!) unless you have something that shows it was purchased before the listed warranty start date.

You need to get a compression test done on the car, its just a smart thing to do for such a big purchase. Also If you can check out the car again pop the hood and check the oil level, that could give you some valuable info. He says he has done all oil changes at 3k, but did he also top off the oil during those 3k miles? If not maybe he was one of those people who used the low oil warning light as a "time for an oil change" light. Depending how you drive you can be a quart low or even more when its time for the next oil change.

Car was purchased new 9/30/06, effectively starting the manufacturer's warranty of 3/36 basic and 5/60 power train, correct.

However, under section, 'Recalls / Special Services Programs' it states, "ROTARY ENGINE CORE WARRANTY 96/100 Start Date 5/30/2008".

How would one interpret this?

I would hold onto whatever says that because that does not sound right. Maybe you just got lucky.

Wasn't 5/2008 when Mazda announced the warranty extension program? I think that is what it means, not that your specific warranty started on that date.

I have no idea. All I know is that I quoted verbatim off of Mazda North American Operations documentation regarding this car. I wish I could scan and post it.

I haven't bought the car yet. I would really like to find out the answer to this for certain. If the Engine Core Warranty started when the car was purchased then I am looking at 2yrs. 8mos of remaining engine warranty. If it is 5/30/08 as the document states, then there is 4yrs. 5mos of engine warranty and that would be awesome!

Well, I went and looked at the car I mentioned at the start of this thread and it was a complete RAT!!! Totally misrepresented, I was pissed. Guy selling it wasn't able to be there so his father showed it to me. Almost 2hrs. Each way to see a "like new" car. This guys definition of 'like new' is much different than mine.

Whole pass side was resprayed, poorly. Front tires were bald. Huge dent in the driver's quarter that looked like someone kicked it. Hood had a major scratch about a foot long all the way down to the metal. The car's entire finish felt like sandpaper. All 4 wheels had curb rash. Interior was filthy.......whole car was a mess. Sad really.

He'll be sitting on that thing for a looooong time unless he's willing to give it away. The pictures he used for the ad must have been taken the day it rolled off the lot. Oh well, off to see another one tomorrow.
