So nobody saw mine on a flatbed heading up 93 yesterday? Lost keys and had to have it towed to liberty Mazda. They saved me almost $200 over what quirk was going to charge me. Thank God for that.

How much did they charge you EMS? I need to have both key fobs replaced on my wife's 5. Lost one, the other is no longer functional as anything else but a hard-key, and it isn't just a dead battery.

i thought i lost my keys at a local hardware store. when i went back to look a second time they told me that they can cut and program a key for a Mazda Rx8. i told them "no you can't" they said that they can for $70. turns out they can. but they have to have an original. don't know how they program it but he looked in his book and all model years of the Rx8 the hardware store can do. of course not every hardware store can they had some special machine under the counter that programs the blanks after they are cut.
anyway back to answer some questions. i had lost my only key. after the girlfriends AAA helped me out, the tow truck driver was cool and prevented any scratches to the front as he lifted the ridiculously low factory ride hight vehicle onto his flatbed. (can't imagine what a bitch that would have been if i lower it) and he was off. i get a call from Liberty about an hr and a half later and it's done. after taxes = $109.11. after speaking with Tom at service the day before and john the day of they advised me to keep looking for my key. if i find it they will program it back to my car for $60. they will also program any key for $60. but purchasing the key and cutting it plus tax and something else was $109. they both suggested that i buy a blank switchblade (like i had) from ebay and have them cut it. they sell just the blank switchblades for $220 compared to ebay $50.
RIWWP,
your key is working electronically if it does anything at all, maybe the buttons don't work on the fob but the chip inside is functioning perfectly if it opens the door or starts the car. you can go to a hardware store (if they have the right equipment) and have it cut and programed. they are just copying the coded information on your current key.

Shaker Automotive Group recently opened up a Mazda dealer here on Cape Cod. http://www.capecodmazda.com
We have been without a Mazda dealer for over 4 years. Hopefully that means I may see some more Mazdas around here, and maybe some RX-8.

I called around a bunch of dealers last night asking about the key replacement and re-program. Liberty quoted me about what you paid EMS.
Flood quoted me $186 per key.
Tasca in Seekonk quoted me $70 for the 1 key, free programming for both.
Tasca in Cranston quoted me $35 for the key, free programming for both.
So...I went ahead and scheduled the appointment for my wife at the Cranston dealer.
Makes you wonder what their profit margin is on it... (Mazda5 though, not RX8, in case it matters)

Yea, it's a 30 minute drive to O'Hara. I've been there a few times. Almost bought my RX-8 from them. Same exact car only it had Nav and they wanted way too much for it. The last time I was there was a year ago to replace the heating control unit. Got it done under warranty. Been smooth sailing since.

the girlfriend swore up and down that she searched every nook and cranny in her car. then drove me to the dealership where she watched me lay down $109 for a key. she woke me up today convinced that i would be soooo excited when she found my keys right at the bottom of her cup holder. i was PISSED!!!!! yes i need a spare key but it could have cost me $35 instead of $109 and wasted an entire day.

Huey,
I'm no padawon. I was the only man growing up in a house with 3 women. I have been a Jedi since birth. But just at my job, they never cease to amaze me.
Jmc, sounds like a plan
The only good news was I spoke with the dealer at seekonk and they said if Liberty only made me one key, I would have a chance that the old key would still work. Thinking that the computer was cleared I never attempted the old key. It still works and I now have 2 functioning keys. The woman took this as a sign that she helped me out by forcing me to get a spare key made. Forgetting that it blew an entire day and hard erned $$$.

They were willing to confirm that her current key's motherboard was fried though. For free even. Shocker. Buying keys off Ebay...

When I talked to the guy at LIBERTY he said that they used to buy them off ebay 100 at a time a about 10 of that 100 wouldn't work. So @90% that's still pretty good for the price

Hello Guys, I've been in the forum for years, but this is the first time in this thread. I have been driving an 04 Ti Gray from Acton to Waltham on Rt. 2 for six years now, and have seen precious few of you. The only one I see see regularly is a Yellow parked in an office lot on Baker Ave in Concord. Yesterday I passed another Ti Gray (while in my wife's car) in Carlisle during one of the detours all over the state during this flooding.
Driving my wife's car b/c I'm having my first major engine trouble this week. Had a strange noise for 2 miles then engine totally dies on morning commute (in rain) on Monday. Towed home. See the cat heat shield dragging down, hanging by O2 sensor cable. the wires are half worn through, so I figure a short shut down the engine. It will now crank, but not fire, so will be replacing battery, coils, and plugs today ('bout time anyway). I had fixed the worn wires, but the sensor maybe shot, however that shouldn't stop the engine from starting. If this doesn't do it, I will have to have it towed in to have engine looked at.
What do you guys think is the best option for Dealer service in the West or North Boston Suburbs? I usually have taken it to Werner Mazda in Manchester, where I bought it, but that's too far for a tow.
Thanks!

Thanks guys, If it comes to it, I'll go there and tell Tom who sent me!
I wasn't able to find the coils at the two parts stores I went to, but I did find the oxygen sensor. I hope that gets it started, otherwise, I have to spend the bucks for the tow.
cheers, or rather "Slainte!" for St. Paddy's. (a tough day for me, having given up alcohol for Lent);
