New Mazda 6 Not Sharing Ford Platform Says News Ltd Paper
According to a News Ltd (Corp) Paper here ...
Mazda says is it a misconception that the New Mazda 6 shares the same platform as the New Ford Mondeo...
No V6 For Australian Spec Mazda 6's built in Japan.

i read a comment about this a few days ago. Apparently the Modeo is on a version of the CD platform they call "EUCD"(for Europe i suppose) while the new Mazda6 is on the CD-3 chassis. Another remark mentioned the "EUCD" can not fit a 6cyl- perhaps why it was nopt chosen since they need the 3.5/3.7 to compete in several markets

I guess automakers these days count shortened or lengthened chassis as some sort of "new" platform. In the same way as a new model of their car is boasted as "all new", when in fact, maybe 10% of the parts are truly fresh vs the outgoing model.
Reminds me when I was at the Lexus dealer in the mid 90s and described the ES300 as "just a Camry". One of the salesmen overheard, came over, and exclaimed : "They tell us it has nothing in common with the Toyota." WTF?!

I guess automakers these days count shortened or lengthened chassis as some sort of "new" platform. In the same way as a new model of their car is boasted as "all new", when in fact, maybe 10% of the parts are truly fresh vs the outgoing model.

As an ex Mazda Parts Manager I can assure you when Mazda releases an ALL New Model line like the New Mazda 6 there are very few carry over (sharing) parts.
More like 10% (Sometimes Engine) of parts are from the old model and 90% are all new components.

The Mazda6 gets a new, larger four-cylinder engine. Also, because Ford does not want to share its 3.5-liter V-6, Mazda will do it one better, using a Hiroshima-sourced 3.7-liter engine that is also in the CX-9. It probably will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Mazda Motor Corp. announced that it started the machining process of a new V-6 engine (3.7 liter) and MZR, an existing straight-four engine (1.8-2.3 liter), in the same production lines (mixed-model assembly lines).
They are produced in the engine plant located in South Ward, Hiroshima, where the company's headquarters plant exists.
Mazda manufactures V-6 engines for the first time in four years, or since August 2003. The company started to produce the new V-6 engines in May 2007.

I guess Ford changed their mind about sharing its V6. The current CX9 has one in it.
So right now all the Mazda 6 engines will be coming from Japan. Inline 4 and V6. I hope Mazda can handle the volume, its a problem for them.
It seems the ties with Ford is slowly diminishing, axe-ing the tribute line and not using Ford's engines. (However the 3.7L has to be based on Ford's 3.5L)
