MAZDA's Flexible Mixed Engine Production And CX-9's New V6

Mazda Achieves Mixed Model Production of V6 and In-Line Four-Cylinder Engines

- As an industry-first, engine parts machining line is capable of 'Volume and Model Mix Flexible Production' -

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation has announced the introduction of mixed model production on the engine parts machining line at its engine plant located near Mazda’s headquarters in Hiroshima. The engine plant manufactures the new 3.7-liter V6 engine and the current in-line four-cylinder 1.8- to 2.3-liter MZR series gasoline engines. Production of V6 engines resumed in May, nearly four years since their manufacture ceased in August 2003. Mazda announced in North America today that the new V6 engine will be mounted in the 2008 CX-9 that is scheduled to go on sale this summer.

The engine machining line was designed to achieve the diversification and high efficiency necessary for flexible production*1 by applying Mazda’s latest production and manufacturing technologies to various engine parts*2 as they move along the line. Jigs and tools that were previously specific to each engine model have been replaced with generic equipment. The result is a consolidated process that supports Volume and Model Mix Flexible Production and requires less investment for equipment.

Mazda’s Senior Managing Executive Officer in charge of Production and Business Logistics, Masaharu Yamaki, said, “Achieving mixed model production for both V6 and in-line four cylinder gasoline engine parts machining at the Ujina plant is the first step toward Volume and Model Mix Flexible Production, which lies at the heart of Mazda’s Manufacturing Innovation concept. Going forward, Mazda will progressively introduce the latest techniques to all of its production facilities in Japan and overseas as part of our Manufacturing Innovation initiative. We will continue to support improvements in production that raise Mazda’s brand value and enhance our business efficiency under the ‘One Mazda’ banner.”

*1 A production method that supports efficient and fast changes in production model and volume.

*2 Five parts: cylinder block, cylinder head, crankshaft, camshaft and connecting rods.

2008 CX-9 Engine Change?

Paddock Talk had an interesting article today about how Mazda has integrated V-6 and I4 production into one plant with Flex Production improvements.

In the first paragraph it states

The engine plant manufactures the new 3.7-liter V6 engine and the current in-line four-cylinder 1.8- to 2.3-liter MZR series gasoline engines. Production of V6 engines resumed in May, nearly four years since their manufacture ceased in August 2003. Mazda announced in North America today that
the new V6 engine will be mounted in the 2008 CX-9
that is scheduled to go on sale this summer.

Did anyone else hear of them upping the Displacement on the new V6?

Ill be asking around for confirmation.

Hi Charlie.

Got an email from Media Mazda Dot Com:

No...the one generic machine now makes parts for both engines.

For example, a single bore honer is used for both engine blocks. In the past they had one for the I4 and one for the V6.

"Yes, it is correct. We'll have more to say about it soon, but the 2008 model will have a new 3.7L V6."

Don't mean to burst your bubble, but this isn't breaking news. Mazda got the engine approved by the state of California a while ago, and on mazdas247.com it was confirmed as well...

I can also confirm this will be the engine in the new mazda6, which I have been saying for months...

awe crap, how am I gonna break this news to my mom??? She got the first loaded GT model CX-9 delivered to Tucson.... the folks are currently on a 5000 mile cross country trip with it, they love it...but it'd be cooler without the Ford 3.5 Cyclone mill....I assume they are keeping the super cool aisin 6 speed tranny??? This is a slick slush box (I can say from personal experience), and I have heard it outperforms the 720 Million dollar 6F tranny that Ford and GM produced for this same motor in their SUV offerings... I bet the Mazda 3.7 will get better MPG too!!!
