Consequences of street racing

A local university student recently convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter was sentenced to 8 years in prison yesterday. His sentence begins immediately after he graduates. What a tragedy for everyone involved.

If someone eggs you on, let them go.

I've said it before and I'll say it again....the legal driving age should be bumpidy bumped up to 21.....You should not drive a car if your not paying for it yourself.....driving is a privilege not a right and teens just don't get this....I was a teen once and I street raced all the time but now that i look back on it...I now understand how dangerous a situation can become and in less than a second everything could be lost.....plus if they did bump the legal driving age we would save on insurance big time!!!!!!

He gets to finish school? That's really lenient. Did the person who's death he caused get to finish anything before he killed them? It still seems to me that it is way too easy/acceptable to kill someone with your car.

I have an 18-year-old son and I've made having a car hell for him because of things like this. The car he drives is always underpowered and right now he is a college and doesn't even have a car, he rides a bike. It's really hard for a parent to see things like this happen to their children. He is probably a really good kid but just got twisted up with the wrong group at the wrong time. I know that street racing is for idiots but, just damn, it's sad for everyone. What kind of incentive does he have now, none! If he is able to continue his education, he will probably be wasted for the rest of his life. The family of the person he killed will never be the same. What a freaking waste!

I have a good friend whos' son is serving a 15 year prison sentence in the Georgia State pen for Felony Vehicular Homicide and DUI. We was a first year grad student in Atlanta, and was out partying and stuff and got to talking to a friend about their cars - he had a riced-up Civic (sound famiilar). They went out for a "demonstration run" in the car, then got into a street race at a stoplight - at the next intersection, a family was in their Honda Accord - he t-boned the Honda in the driver's door at better than 85 mph.

All three in the Honda were killed (Dad, mom, 9 month old baby), and the friend died as well. The driver (my friend's son) was hospitalized for five months in the prison wing of the county hospital in Atlanta, then released for trial, was "free" for 9 months, then his trial was held, and he was swiftly convicted. He got 15 years.

He'll get out when he's 38. Whatta waste.

Street raicing ... oh yeah, what a great idea.

There was a 24 year old arrested for street racing here. He didn't kill anyone but he was a chronic racer ticketed numerous times. He was sentenced to walk the parking lot at the hangout where the races were set up for 52 weekends (1 AM to 3 AM) while wearing a sandwich sign that says "I lost my license because of street racing". His license was suspended for three years. The judge stipulated that if he failed to do his "community service" or was caught driving he would go to jail immediately.

The ACLU is protesting the sentence because it is humiliating. Neither the defendant nor his attorney had any objections to the sentence.

^^That is a very lenient sentance, and the only reason he got off with a little humiliation and loss of liscense instead of jail time was because he didn't hurt anybody. The ACLU should mind their own business.

There should be more creative punishments

My brother is a California Highway Patrol officer. A few months ago he was telling me about a pretty nasty scene on the freeway where a kid in a 911 Turbo (probably mommy & daddy) was racing some other guy on the freeway in Orange County and about 100 mph he lost control and was thrown from the car out onto the freeway. A car behind him could not stop in time and hit the kid right at the neck area and managed to split his head from his body. He told me the morbid thing was the force of the impact was so great that the head literally shot into the bushes, so it took them like another hour to find his head. Pretty gross, but true.

I don't mind when a street racer does something stupid & wraps his car around a telephone pole, its when they are driving reckless & kill the soccer mom in her minivan with 3 kids.

Yeah, I agree 100%!!!! If you are going to act stupid....make sure you only hurt yourself, that's why I CAN'T STAND drunk drivers or these punks raceing in the street!

The risk is not worth the little and temporary thrill you might get...how do you give that person back to their family????? You cant....STOP STREET RACEING!!!!!!!!!

Street Racing is retarded. People should teach their children how to be responsible. I know my parents have taught me, me being 18, there is no need to do crazy ****. Life is too precious. If you want to race, go to a track, dont be a dumbshit about it.
But man, those poor families. I knew a guy that spun out when racing when taking a courner, hit a tree and thats all she wrote....

Smackity smack smack his brain went rackity rack rack, as his body went crackity crack crack, then his blood went splattity splat splat, now my ride is gone...how will i get backity back back?----> Poem dedicated to Josh, the idiot.

When I heard someone talk about raising the driving age a few days ago my first reaction was to be against it. But then when I thought back on all the stupid things we used to do, I was all for it. I mean I was a lot more responsible then other 16 year olds I knew, but I still did incredibly stupid things. I say raise it to 18.

Kills in an RX-8?

What cars would we be posting kills on? Last time I looked our cars aren't that quick off the line. So even if we did have a kills section it would be filled with some lame kills.

Raise the driving age to 21 for males only. How many teenage girls do you hear about who've killed someone while street racing? I'm sure there are a few out there who behave irresponsibly (one's right here on this forum) but for the most part girls just aren't out there killing people.

Face it gentlemen -- this is one case where sex discrimination is called for and necessary.

it probably would be filled with lame kills and lies. That's what they are all filled with anyways.

I wish we could do that. Then I wish I could ask if a woman plans on having kids anytime soon at an interview, then not hire her if she says yes. I would also like to not even consider them for jobs which require heavy lifting, or pay them based on their performance. I would also like to see women leave sports because lets face it, who the hell cares what the fastest, strongest, etc women can do when they can't hold a candle to the mens performance anyhow.

Uh-oh, you touched a nerve. But to answer what you brought up, from my experience teenage girls are responsible for many minor accidents, talking on your cellphone and clipping someone. Where as the teenage guys are responsible for fewer, but much more serious accidents. So why not prevent both and raise both groups age.

Age

I don't believe age is the answer. The parents of these children have to stop allowing them to purchase sports cars. If you take the gusto out of the car, the kid will stop trying to race it.

On that note, some teenagers are very responsible with their licence and therefore it would be unfair to punish everyone. Rember these kids are 18 years old, and they can fight in a war, driving a tank, or a jeep. There is no way that this would fly.
