Carbon Fibre Wheels
I was just poking around NSXprime as I tend to do and found an interesting thread on carbon fibre wheels
They're really expensive, but light as hell; 8.5 lbs. Apparently they have seen them knock half a second off 0-60 times, although no mention of the weight of wheels they replaced.

I have never seen a set for cars before. I know a guy with a set for his motorcycle that weight 2 lbs or something stupid like that. Have their been CF wheels which are D.O.T approved??

You are right about the idea that carbon fibre fails catastrophically when it fails.
As for F1, there is a regulation that states:
which rules out composite materials
As for F1, there is a regulation that states:
All wheels must be made from an homogeneous metallic material.

I also think that there should be a certain amount of weight on a wheel to maintain traction.....an 8 pound wheel on a high hp car would probably spin out easier....
