Little Lug Nut problem

So I go to switch to winter tires today, get first three wheels off no problem.

Then I come to my left front wheel. Lo and behold, the lock nut is STRIPPED.

the pattern is worn down and whenever I try to loosen it, the key pops out.

HOW THE HELL do I get this nut off?

I tried an impact wrench, didnt slip, but it was an electric wrench so didnt have enough torque to budge it.

Please help, big snowfall tomorrow and I want to get it done!!!

Any ideas guys??

I just saw a commercial for one of those wratcheting multi-socket wrench thingies. I believe it has a rubber lining or something.

There are special sockets for removing these...Snap-on makes them...you hammer them on and use an impact gun to remove...I'd take it to a good tire or alignment place they should have them

haha damn.

Oh well, Turns out I pay for the dealers stupiditiy again.

Why are dealers so underqualified sometimes? Youd think you would pay a premium for exceptional service, not pay more for worse service.

This is kinda off topic, but I lost a lug nut once. Not the special locking ones, just an ordinary lug nut and I thought hey I"ll just grab one when I"m at O'reily's getting oil, but they didn't carry them. (Wasn't too surprised). So I had to go to mazda who charged me $6.50! For One!

The dealer is probably somewhat at fault, however there does appear to be a bit of a problem with the locking lugnuts on these cars. There has been a thread or two about it. I have been advised to take mine off in order to avoid the problem. Eveyone needs to be aware of this potential nightmare. I've sold wheels to people who receivrd damage due to this.

Surprising that they charged you. Mine said they have to take the stock ones off to put the locking ones in and they let me have as many as I wanted. They had a whole box of them. I got a whole new set just in case. You should talk to the service guy, they should be able to hook you up.

If you're going to let garage-monkeys do your wheels, replace the locking nuts with the originals before taking it in. When you get it back, loosen and re-tighten all of the lugnuts by hand, with a torque wrench, to specs, including the locking nuts if you desire.

Once again, BEWARE.
I have been warned by a Mazda shop owner who properly torques all the wheels of the cars he works on to just take them off. He owns an 8 himself. I could be mistaken but I think that part of the problem is the required torque being in excess of 100 lb/ft. Most Mazdas used to be 67 to 83.

get rid of all the OE lugs and lock - they are complete POS, replace them with a quality aftermarket lug/lock set

I prefer a light coating of anti-sieze on the stud threads but you have to account for the lubricity with a slightly lower torque setting

I threw a lug nut the other day, so I am shopping for all new ones after reading this thread.

Anyone have a link to some nice looking lugs?

There was a thread about 7-sided lugnuts.

Lesson learned -- always research this forum before taking any actions, spending any money, on our cars!
