I was getting new tires today and thought I would look under the car to see what they did last week when I took it in for recall work. I could not see any type of heat sheilding near the gas type. When I got home tonight I looked with the TSB, it says to place a stick under the hood or on the bulkhead. I don't see any stickers, I even looked in the door jams. Lastly, I read in the TSB that after 10 seconds at 8500+ parked it will cut down to 900. So I tried that, after 30 seconds I figure it is not going to stop. I found the paper they gave me and it says fuel tank recall. Does this mean they lied? How can I check for sure before I make a fool out of myself?

BTW- they only had the car on the rack for 10-15 minutes.

i won't be surprised if they didn't do it. better take it in and ask the service manager to show you proof of work.

But they billed Mazda for it. Should I call MNAO if I find out for sure?

I had something similar happen. http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=71999
I got MNAO to call the dealership and confirm, and they did. They said for absolute confirmation you can call MNAO Cust. Service in about a week and give them your VIN. By then it will be in there database as to what exactly was done to your car. Mine ended up being ignorance and lack of communication on the part of the Service Manager.

it doesn't matter if you called MNAO. they just say they did it, charge the parts on the ticket, etc. etc. so all the paper work is filled out correctly by the technician, the parts needed for the recall are charged out on the ticket, the warranty clerk passes it through, and the service writer closes the ticket recording what the technician did. everyone gets paid for something they really didn't do. MNAO just gets the warranty paper work and assumes everything is done properly. if you have physically seen the fuel tank and cannot make out a thermal shield. i would take it back to them and have them actually show it to you. you have the right to see the work done on your car. you signed papers stating that with the service writer. you better check on that...i've seen some shiesty work in this business.

I ment call MNAO to imform them that they didn't do the work, provided I know for sure they didn't.

well...if you have proof, then sure, call MNAO. snap pictures of the missing shield on the tank, the missing recall stickers, a copy of the recall and service receipt. that should be all the proof you need.

Call the general manager of the dealership and inform him that you have good evidence that this SAFETY recall was not performed by his shop as they told you. And that unless this is cleared up immediately you will contact NHTSA to inform them that his dealership is in violation of the law.

I'm going to jack the car up today and take a look under it. What should I look for?

In Oz the "Mazda Dealer" has to label and hold all parts that are replaced under warranty, they are then inspected by Mazda Rep and then destroyed.
So, I dont know how a dealer can do as you say without trouble down the line.

If there is any investigation by MNAO they would know what new parts (quantity) have been purchased by the dealer through MNAO wholesale Spare Parts Department.
i.e. 6 x New fuel tanks, less warranty claims or sales = stock on hand.
That would apply for any parts replaced.

Parts are not necessarily replaced during the performance of this recall, ASH8. Most cars will only have a foam heat shield applied.

I am refering to the "general" assumption made by Dan that some dealers can not be trusted to perform warranty procedures. And claim for work not done.

Heat shield is a part, and it should be visible at the front of the tank covering the center seam of the tank if I have read this thing right. I might not have so feel free to correct me. However, I had a dealer claim that they put new spark plugs in my car, bill Mazda, and never put them in. I have the receipt and I still have the defective plug that was put in my car at the factory . . . unless they were able to replace my plug, which was never rust proofed at the contact end and had corrosion all over it, with another one with the exact same problem. Seems improbable.

However, I doubt that any dealer would do this with a safety recall. That is a serious violation of the law. I would take the car back to the dealer if you are unsure and have them show you the heat shield. They should be happy to do it to make you a happy customer. Don't fly off the handle until you are sure though.
