View Full Version : looking for a quieter exhaust than my Greddy.

Okay..

My dad is complaining of how loud my 8 is with my midpipe and the Greddy cat-back. So, I am thinking of either getting the Borla or Racing Beat's cat-back to tone it down a bit. I know the Greddy is the loudest, but RB's should tone it down a bit, plus I like the build quality of their exhaust. What do you guys think? Borla, or the Racing Beat, and also; does the Racing beat have a dual-wall tip, so the exterior doesn't get black from carbon? I am trying to get a cat-back that won't have the tips turning gold, and black from the carbon. My Greddy's are black and gold. :( We have a Z also, which has the Borla and those tips are perfect chrome. They have the dual-wall tips, so the interior wall gets black, and the exterior doesn't.
I know I can reduce noise by getting rid of my mid-pipe, but I am looking for a solution to the cat-back; becuase I will NEVER get rid of my mid-pipe. :)

Thanks,

Look at Omi's post on adding a resonator to the pipe between the Midpipe and the mufflers. Should be able to add 16-18" resonator to tone it down. I'm looking at doing the same thing...just a bit loud for my tastes

hack the tips off your greddy and weld them onto the stock exhaust and put it back on :D

one of the local guys had the exact same thing done, a resonater welded into the mount for the catback. His SP2 was MUCH quieter.

The midpipe is the problem. A resonator there, and possibly a tertiary resonator like I added (as mentioned above, thread here (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=34191)) may do the trick. And if you replace the Greddy, the Racing Beat is reputed to be the quietest.

as someone already mentioned... do a search for omicron's thread on adding a resonator inline with the cat-back.

I had the racing beat, I have the B&B midpipe and exhaust now, and I've heard the B&B midpipe with the Borla. Omicron is right RacingBeat is the most quiet.

I heard the Mazdaspeed and that seemed substantially quieter than either the Greddy or the RB exhaust. Take a look on the Mazdatrix website. They have a video/sound clip of each exhaust on the RX8. Not a fan of the smaller tip though.

The mazdaspeed exhaust was designed to be used with a hi-flow cat. (i.e the mazdaspeed rx8). I think the note would be perfect with the ms and hi-flow cat. Btw the tips are not smaller than oem its actually 1/12th inch bigger (yes i measured it :p ), its b/c of the rolled tips that makes them appear smaller.

I've got a HKS on mine and I think that's too loud too.
Admittedly haven't heard the note of the Greddy, but most Australian RX8s are fitted with a Hymee cat back.
These are designed and constructed by the Australian forum moderator, Hymee, himself.
Check it out here:

or do a search on the Australian forum to get feedback on it.

i think the greddy sp2 sounds sick. who cares what your dad says! unless he's part owner or something. from what i have heard though the racing beat is the definite quietest, but it still sounds cool.

Hymee catback has a very nice sound and not too loud. My Fujitsubo is even quieter

i'm just not a big fan of those HUGE tips on the SP2.. hymee's look equally huge.

I'm actually not talking about being bigger than OEM, but compared to the RB & Greddy the tips of the MS exhaust look tiny on the Mazdatrix video.

Racing Beat is the exhaust you want. http://www.rx8store.com/product.asp?3=307

Ha Ha Ha... I love the sound of my Greddy also. The problem is that my dad paid cash for the car and I just pay him back on a monthly payment basis. So, I gotta listen to what he says~to some degree. My midpipe already has the resonator, I am probably going to get the RB becuase it has a good build quality. The mazdaspeed is just not even in the question, I think it is the biggest waist of money on earth! I like Borla, but it is too much like the stock cat-back design. My dad is a dick because he has a Tubi exhaust on his Maranello 575, which is louder than shit. He just doesn't want me to attract a lot of attention of cops.

A lot of people are looking for exhaust lately. Good to see.

I think it is a very personal choice. Read and seek other people advice and hear as much as possible before making the choice. A few people did change their exhaust and probably good to speak to them too

Good luck and enjoy searching - it is the fun of modding IMO

Hmm...maybe we should swap exhausts. I just got the JIC exhaust and it's a little too quiet...the tips looks really nice and big...but then again I haven't been able to floor my car since it only has 240 miles on it...I'm getting the K&N intake installed tomorrow which should help the sound a bit...but if it gets too loud, I'll have to take the intake back out...won't really know til I am able to floor this car and get it up to 9000 rpm...highest I've been so far is 7,000 (just once)...break in period sucks on these new cars. Anyone here have the JIC and K&N combo? Or just the JIC? comments?

I liked the sound of the JIC, but wanted something a little louder...well I just got the K&N installed today and it's freakin tooooo loud. You can hear my car from 5 blocks away...I'm seriously considering removing the filter....it's a shame, but I don't think my neighbors will be too happy...they already have a loud a$$ Harley around and I hate for them to go through my loud 8.
