Excellent! My Cosmo had a limiter that cut off the ignition. The problem was that it would jolt back to life when the revs went down, not fun and probably not healthy for the engine. Yup! Rotaries thrive and survive on high revs! The redline on my GS is 7k but I know guys that rev 'em up to 8k and they're just fine. My stock Nikki doesn't give me much after 7 so I don't bother. The loads on the stationary gears increase exponentially with revs, and the curve is almost vertical much past 10,000 rpm. (This from a technical paper presented to the SAE by Kenichi Yamamoto of Mazda some years ago.) In order to have obtained a safe working limit of 10,000 rpm, Mazda must have done some serious lightning in the rotor department, or discovered some wonderful new strengthening process for the stationary gears (or both). But 20,000 rpm is still a long way off. |
