View Full Version : Greddy Exhaust - Popping When Shifting
jrbirch 03-28-2010, 06:07 PM Hey All,
I just bought a used RX8 (2005) with an aftermarket Greddy exhaust. Interesting thing: it "Pops" when I accelerate hard and then shift.
Is that normal?
nuke0907 03-28-2010, 06:10 PM mine does it too. you should have someone follow behind you at night. i bet you shoot some nice flames out. you might not have a catalytic converter also.
RotaryMachineRx 03-28-2010, 06:23 PM I have the GReddy SE exhaust on my car... just put it on last summer... with any aftermarket exhaust on the RX8 you get some nice back fire... even with a Cat. Without a cat you will shoot flames if your car is running hot enough... It's just a sweet Rotary thing
RotaryGuy904 03-28-2010, 06:25 PM yea, its just backfire.
jrbirch 03-28-2010, 06:33 PM Sweet. It causes an instant "Check Engine" light though with a Cat code. *grin*
Thanks for the reassurance!
RotaryMachineRx 03-28-2010, 06:54 PM hmmm, thats a little odd, are you sure you have a cat? Mine doesnt throw any CEL's
tza0001 03-28-2010, 07:11 PM Sweet. It causes an instant "Check Engine" light though with a Cat code. *grin*
Thanks for the reassurance!
This might be an indication of misfire. How many miles does the car have? Have you ever changed spark plugs, wires, and coils?
Spoolin8 03-28-2010, 07:29 PM last time my engine light flashed at me i had a misfire and a new engine ;)
RotaryMachineRx 03-29-2010, 11:04 AM Yeah... To OP.. I would get that looked at
jrbirch 03-29-2010, 11:46 AM It hasn't had 4206F and it's in this week for the work. I suspect that's the issue.
Used, 2005 GT with 76K.
Dunno if it has a cat or not, but I presume it does. Dealer didn't mention anything when it went in for it's post-purchase checkup (bought it from a non-Mazda dealer...first thing, straight to the pros) and "missing catalytic converter" would be something they'd notice I think...
Nice to know that CEL w/ Cat is something to pay attention to even with the exhaust.
Thanks.
Lunacy 03-29-2010, 12:18 PM I love when my Borla pops.
lilring 03-29-2010, 02:28 PM I feel like a little kid again when my setup pops. I smile everytime and laugh
the1jesster 03-29-2010, 03:45 PM Anyone know the exact reason why when we have an open exhaust our 8's go pop,pop when we shift?
rubberduckie 03-29-2010, 09:35 PM I think it is due to the incomplete burn of fuel in the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber in a rotary isn't as 'efficient' as that found in a piston engine and the pop is the fuel in the exhaust system being ignited.
I think.....
MarcMiller 03-29-2010, 10:36 PM hearing this makes me want an exhaust even more!:Eyecrazy:
gregs 03-29-2010, 10:46 PM did someone say pop? i have a greddy too..lol
