View Full Version : Jon316G's Dyno Run Analysis
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 08:42 PM I performed 3 dyno runs today and want some opinions since I'm not very knowledgeable on reading these graphs.
List of mods are in my signature.
The outcome was surprising... I expected a little more, but its difficult to judge since I don't have a stock dyno to base the improvements off of.
I also don't like the A/F ratio since it starts off lean and gradually richens.
Shouldn't this be more linear?
And could this be effecting my numbers (HP and/or TQ)?
My first thought was, "Oh no, is it time for a compression test!"
But the graph curves appear very good.
Wouldn't I see some crazy "spiking" along the curve if I had any electrical or mechanical issues?
Each PDF has 3 pages of information, the first page is the graph and the other two are the text-based data.
Thanks for taking the time to review this and any input would be greatly appreciated.

05rex8 09-14-2009, 08:46 PM what kind of dyno is this?
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 08:47 PM Dynojet
dannobre 09-14-2009, 08:48 PM Those are decent graphs...even the AFR's aren't that bad...
Your AP tune looks OK...the AFR graph is a bit hard to read..but you are missing the usual pig rich top end from the stock tune
05rex8 09-14-2009, 08:51 PM does seem a little low for a dynojet
the power and tq curve look fine tho
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 08:57 PM does seem a little low for a dynojet
the power and tq curve look fine tho
That's what I thought too...
My friend was also there tuning his TransAm and his first run was 20HP less than before on the same dyno.
What's the chance the dyno is reading incorrectly.
@!!narotordo 09-14-2009, 09:00 PM I had low numbers when i dynoed my car for the first time. But having never done this before I had no clue what I was doing lol
After I found I needed new coils wire spark plugs oil change and a seafoam really bad.
This is a good thread to check out

I doubt I need new coils ;)
chickenwafer 09-14-2009, 09:14 PM Your AFR actually looks pretty good for an NA car. Not nearly as rich as stock.
Your power curve is pretty good too. My money is on the dyno reading low. Don't get hung up on it tho, it the car still feels quick then that's all that matters. But now you have a basline with your current mods so if you change anything you have this baseline
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 09:20 PM Your AFR actually looks pretty good for an NA car. Not nearly as rich as stock.
But shouldn't the line be more linear?
@!!narotordo 09-14-2009, 09:25 PM You never know. Look what happen with Jedi on his first dyno run with them. I'm just saying. Hey let me see if I can find my dyno slip brb...
@!!narotordo 09-14-2009, 09:27 PM Oh yeah did you pull the room fuse?
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 09:27 PM You never know.
I only say I don't need coils because they are BHR's :)
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 09:28 PM Oh yeah did you pull the room fuse?
I remember reading that whole thing and I don't want to get into that here.
But no... I didn't.
05rex8 09-14-2009, 09:38 PM all you need to do is turn off traction control
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 09:39 PM all you need to do is turn off traction control
I did tell the guy to push/hold the DSC for 8 sec.
@!!narotordo 09-14-2009, 09:54 PM How about staticleg diy? did you his steps?

How come you didnt take it to redline? Graphs show 8200.
Dyno in 4th gear, should be 5th (although I dont think thats going to cost you the 10-15 HP you were hoping for.
Im no tuning guru, but 12:1 up top seems a little rich to me.
Since you dont have a stock baseline, you cant tell how much you gained with the mods. Maybe yours stock is one of the 170 HP cars?
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 10:21 PM How come you didnt take it to redline? Graphs show 8200.
I told the guy to take it to 8500.
Didn't see a reason to go higher than that.
9krpmrx8 09-14-2009, 11:06 PM My Scangauge II reads 8300 at red line according to a little past the 9k mark on the stock tach.
05rex8 09-14-2009, 11:08 PM Which gear were the pulls done in?
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 11:09 PM Which gear was the pulls done in?
The sheets have the gear listed ;)
But the first one was in 4th, they wanted to do 3rd for the other two.

oh, I missed that
I didn't feel like opening the files again, lol
4th is usually what is used
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 11:13 PM Your AP tune looks OK...the AFR graph is a bit hard to read..but you are missing the usual pig rich top end from the stock tune
I forgot to mention... each PDF has 3 pages of information.
So the first page is the graph and the other two are the text-based data.
You should be able to read the AFR easier with that.
Jon316G 09-14-2009, 11:14 PM 4th is usually what is used
That's what I thought... but he wanted to do the rest in 3rd and I just went with it :)
Jedi54 09-15-2009, 02:10 AM You never know. Look what happen with Jedi on his first dyno run with them. I'm just saying. Hey let me see if I can find my dyno slip brb...
what?
I pulled 203 whp at my last dyno day.
if you're referring to the BHR ignition, it was due to a broken spark plug wires. The wire broke in the boot where it does a 90 degree bend to the coil. (both trailings were broken)
Vyndictive 09-15-2009, 07:47 AM Jon, how much did this cost you? Even though I am too afraid to dyno my car. I'm sure it was fun though.
DarthRX8 09-15-2009, 07:47 AM Listen to Chicken, don't let a number get you down!
Your curves look smooth so maybe the dyno was underestimating yor output. Just like others have said it looks like they should have taken in higher up into the redline. If they stopped at 8500 rpms on your tach then it will be lower than that. Next time take it to 9000 since the tach reads higher than the output.
Jon316G 09-15-2009, 08:04 AM Jon, how much did this cost you? Even though I am too afraid to dyno my car. I'm sure it was fun though.
It costs $65 for 3 runs and an additional $10 for AFR reading (which I recommend).
Listen to Chicken, don't let a number get you down!
I was a little bummed... but I really did this to verify that my tune was going smoothly and my car was operating like it should.
I wasn't going there expecting HUGE gains.
The power curve looks awesome, but the lower numbers and the roughly 2.0 AFR difference from start to finish made me wonder if something was wrong.
AFR looks good and the your curves look pretty linear
Shijin-Kun 09-15-2009, 10:40 PM I think its the dyno, 65 for 3 runs and 10 for the AFR. The shop im going to its 75 for 3 pulls and 25 for the wideband reading. Im planning on dyno'ing my new 8 to see how healthy the engine is.
@!!narotordo 09-16-2009, 01:02 AM ^Hey post your runs in the dyno comp link I posted :)
Oh I know Jedi I was just saying something may be wrong. You never know.
John I cant find my dyno slip. I will have to ask my other half where I put it. Anyway when I find it I will list the list of mods and when I get my new goodies installed I will do some more runs :smoker:
shazy 09-18-2009, 03:25 AM Just read this :)
Well wat was the day like? Was it ultra hot and humid or was it a nice cool day?
But seriously, if your friends car is 20whp than normal why dont you ask them to check it out?
FazdaRX_8 09-21-2009, 06:00 PM what are the two dips at 6500 and 7500 rpms? the stock dynos have em two
Jon316G 09-21-2009, 07:07 PM I believe its the intake valves opening.
Charles R. Hill 09-21-2009, 07:13 PM what are the two dips at 6500 and 7500 rpms? the stock dynos have em two
The dips are from the APV and VDI valves opening, respectively, at 6,250 and 7,250 RPMs.
Brettus 09-21-2009, 07:36 PM looks like a perfectly good dyno to me , they just backed off a little early that's all .
FazdaRX_8 09-21-2009, 08:10 PM The dips are from the APV and VDI valves opening, respectively, at 6,250 and 7,250 RPMs.
is there a link that explains these valves function in detail?
SiLVeRE8 09-21-2009, 11:44 PM Seems quite low with the mods you have... Maybe its the dyno. Cause when I had similar mods as you I ran 201.5 hp and 143 tq
TeamRX8 09-22-2009, 01:18 AM How about staticleg diy? did you his steps?

How many times do you have to be told by people who dyno strong numbers in an RX-8 that the linked thread above is BS
BS!!!!!!
It's an insult to this entire forum that such BS is posted as a sticky. :cussing:
The OPs graphs don't look too bad, plenty of people have seen much worse ....
.
Jedi54 09-22-2009, 01:20 AM yeah, I've never pulled a fuse to dyno a car. That's lame
9krpmrx8 09-22-2009, 01:21 AM Yep.
shazy 09-22-2009, 01:35 AM damn. Does the car feel much faster than stock?
Jon316G 09-22-2009, 01:38 AM damn. Does the car feel much faster than stock?
Its a noticeable difference.
