So in the accessories brochure, it says the color-keyed chapparal/black and red/black shift knobs are for automatic only. Anyone know why, or does anyone know if this can be made to fit the MT shifter anyway? I think it's kinda stupid that they offer everything but the color-keyed shifter knob on both models... Thanks.

I was wondering abou that too. My only guess at this point as to why they're AT only is because the top of the know doesn't display the gear diagram, but rather just has a logo. Well, that's my guess anyway, although I don't know why they wouldn't make one with the gear diagram.

I had cross-posted my question to the general discussion forum also, and here's the answer I got back:

"I tried to install the shifter knob available as an accessory for the automatic in my MT and it would not fit. The holes are different physical sizes - I even removed the chrome bevel at the bottom of the auto shifter - no fit."

Hope this helps.

The ashtray has been replaced with a more functional "XM Commander" Ive attached the thread that a bunch of us have been talking about it on. So far Best Buy is the only place that has it, and its a pretty simple install. Took all of 30 minutes and you dont even have to cut anything.

I checked with Mazda and they want $200 for the red leather handbrake and $165 for the red leather gearshift knob. I think they'd look cool in my Red RX-8 with the red/black interior, but not at that price. Has anyone ever had an upolstery shop do something like that? Would it be any cheaper?

hm....the red gearshift knob didn't come standard in your car? you have the red/black leather interior right?

The standard gearshift knob color is black, I've got the black/chapparel interior, and my gearshift is black too.

might start a new thread with this but has anyone noticed their rotary emblem on the top of the shift knob getting wear...mine has a worn spot on the bottom angle...quality sux on this it should have been a piece of METAL not painted plastic...

oh well...

oops...anyway..my point being...if it wears that easily WTF are they thinking charging that much $$ for that...even with out premature wear that still is a rediculous price...for both...!!sorry left that part out do to my venting above...

Too damn expensive. But, my humble opinion, too much red. Just the red handbrake alone was pushing it in my view.

I want both the shift knob and brake handle in red/black. I think it goes quite nicely with the red/black interior already. Then again, I have a 10th Anniversary Edition Miata where everything is blue... blue/black steering wheel, blue/black shifter, blue seude/black leather seats, blue carpeting, blue boot cover. So I am partial to matching interior pieces :)

The shifter knob price is steep! If, like me, you ARE considering paying that much for a red shift knob (and with the wear problem discussed above, I assume we ALL will eventually) for a little more money you can get the LIGHTED red shift knob from canzoomer. Even steeper at ~$225, but since it is lighted, perhaps it has a different clear protective top that won't allow it to wear as quickly as the stock shifter.

Does anyone have one of the lighted shifters yet who can comment on the design differences?

I have one on order, so I guess I'll find out soon enough. At the very least I'll still have the original shift knob to put back on when resale time comes along.

I'm considering changing out the stock 6spd shift knob with an aftermarket one, I don't really like the shape of the stock one but I'll miss the cool rotor symbol on it.

Which of these Momo knobs do you guys like better :

gotta be the red or airmetal combat evo. those F16 ones are too weird. the airmetal matches the foot pedals; the red matches the seat. I'd have to see it in the car to choose. If the red color isn't a perfect match with the seats then go with the metal.

Although I like the stock best, to answer your question, I like the f16s. Never seen those before, and I like that "skeletonized" cut-out. Probably make great bottle openers, too. :D

i agree with 8 wannabe, the airmetal would match the pedals... and if you have the red interior the red combat would look nice.

The Combat F16 Evos look like walking stick handles. If you have to go with Momo, go with the Combat Evo Airmetal. If you have the wherewithall, look into Team Voodoo (Google it!). The Pearl knobs are soooo nice.

Wherewithall? The Voodoo shift knobs are less than HALF the price mentioned for the Momos! Well, unless you go with the Titanium, then they're slightly more. I've got two aluminum Voodoo for my Miata right now (regular size crinkle black, and magnum size polished), so I'll try one on the RX-8 next summer, but ultimately my Ti RX-8 needs a Ti Voodoo knob.

I had something very similar to the Combat Evo in my Infiniti. One of very few manual Infinitis out there. Felt great, looked great. I'm sticking with the stock piece though. I think it's very unique and I like the feel. JMO.

Well, that's good, since you're not supposed to drive with your hand on the shifter anyway! ;) Seriously - both hands on the steering wheel, at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock. When you need to shift, move the shifter, and put your hand back on the wheel.

hmmm...were you my race instructor or something..????...um..FYI Gordo...I know how to drive...been doing it for quite sometime...when I'm driving city, in stop and go traffic i'm not going to keep moving my hand up and down from the shifter to the steering wheel...so sue me....

Where the hell does this guy get off telling me what....never mind..

Anyway...the OEM shifter is the one i'm referring to DC...it's always at the bottom angle of the rotory symbol...i'll snap a pic and post...

I could have just said "keep your hand off your knob when driving", but that would have been rude! :p I'm not telling you anything, just a suggestion - you're the one wearing out shift knobs, not me. I can't say that I've ever seen noticeable wear on any shift knob of mine, including one for 9 years and 140K miles.

No offence intended - on the internet, it's impossible to know what sort of experience or training someone has. There's lots of young people out there that think they're fast drivers who drive with one hand on the top of the steering wheel and one hand permanently on the shifter, and don't know any differently (they're fun to watch at their first autocross ;) They also get faster very quickly with only a tiny bit of instruction). Without having any knowledge of your driving experience or history, my comment was intended as a helpful suggestion, for you, and for any others that might read this. That's all. Don't be so sensitive, this is the internet! :D (is that going to get another "Where the hell does this guy get off telling me not to be so sensitive" reaction? :p

Gordon

no...i'm just not your 15 year old who's father has bought them an RX-8...

FYI, i have in the past owned Car Tunes ( a tuning shop), and Sound Effects (car audio shop)...approaching 30 i think i know how to drive...and another tid bit...i raced my Integra for 3 years (legally) and drove it for a full 6 years before letting it go and never had to change my "knob"....

no i'm not overly sensitive either...just don't like people making assumptions...but as you said...it is the internet..no offense taken no offense given...

thanks for your "aid"...maybe some of the "hot shots" that DO frequent this forum will use it....

I don't like keeping my hand on the shift knob i know its a bad habit. I'm not a young person that thinks im a fast driver (i am young though) it's a habit because i change gears more frequently when im driving city to try and save mileage (i hope im not wrong). Is that wrong? i do keep both hands on the wheel when i can though. as in available somehwat long periods of time. any tips?

sounds ok to me... if you don't wanna shift so much, then don't: there aren't rules that say "thou shalt not ever skip a gear"...

if you're coming around a tight righty downtown, during rush hour, on a red and you're worried about someone coming up really quick behind you, just leave it in first as you turn and accelerate; as you take it up to 5 or 6k, drop it down into 3rd to cruise.

if you're starting pointing down an appreciably sloped hill, start in 2nd... etc etc etc.

Yup, I'd just suggest that you only touch the shift knob when you're actually moving it. Otherwise, put your hand back on the steering wheel. It's a habit in itself to do this, but it's worth developing. From the steering wheel, your hand is only a few inches away from the shift knob, so it only takes a split-second to reach the shift knob when you need to shift. When you don't need to shift, your hand isn't doing any good there - in fact, some gearboxes don't take kindly at all to having a hand resting on the shift knob, because the pre-load on the bushings can cause significant wear in the gearbox! If your shifting hand is back on the steering wheel, then you can react much more effectively to any sudden traffic situations that arise, such as the moron in the SUV changing lanes without looking, etc.

Gordon

As Gordon said, plus, if you ever attend a performance driving school (Bondurant, etc.) they'll whack your hand but good if you rest your hand on the shift knob, or don't have your hands in the correct position on the wheel.

I want to purchase the MOMO F16 EVO manual shift knob.

1. will it fit in the manual RX8?

2. which finish would compliment or match the intereior best?

3. how do you guys it would look in the 8? would it be taller than the stock 8 shifter knob?
