View Full Version : Mazsport ignition questions:
dothackRAVE 08-14-2008, 09:13 PM I placed an order for a Cobb AccessPORT, and I was wondering if any specific calibrations have to be done for it to work with a Mazsport ignition.
Also, I have been hearing that Mazsport has troubles delivering, and people are waiting like 3 months! How true is this?
sfredrx8 08-14-2008, 09:25 PM I also want to know whether or not Mazsport IS is the same function as HKS Twin Power DLII unit. If not, are they compatible. I know HKS is designed specifically to stock set up. Any thoughts...
paulmasoner 08-14-2008, 11:10 PM Mazsport's are a ignition coil replacement/upgrade. The HKS is an amplifier. While it may provide the same benefits in theory, the HKS is still going to leave you with pooly performing and short lived OEM coils...

Also, I have been hearing that Mazsport has troubles delivering, and people are waiting like 3 months! How true is this? The Mazsport coils have dwell characteristics that are different from OEM coils. For most NA motors, there seems to be no issue with dwell settings. For most FI motors, the dwell just needs to be corrected in your AP calibration
Razz1 08-14-2008, 11:13 PM You don't need to set the dwell on a NA set up.
If you are FI w/ Access Port, then you need MM to send you the calibration.
paulmasoner 08-14-2008, 11:15 PM ^^ woo hoo, i've been paying attention around here :) i actually got one right

MazdaManiac 08-15-2008, 05:47 AM Once you receive your AccessPORT, you will receive a second e-mail asking for some information. In your reply, remember to mention that you have the MazSport ignition and I will adjust your settings accordingly.
Jedi54 08-15-2008, 12:40 PM AP will fix your dwell settings.
If Mazsport has the ignition IN STOCK then the wait shouldn't be Too long. IF they're out of stock..... don't hold your breath.
mysql 08-15-2008, 12:45 PM Despite the promotional material for these coils claiming to be plug and play, they are not designed for this vehicle and require tuning to get working properly. Several people have reported losing power with NA setups. I had 3 months (Jan till March) of problems before Scott found out about the dwell characteristics of the coils.
Anyone who buys these coils then asks Jeff to tune it for them, might want to ask themselves why they aren't just buying coils that work with the vehicle without requiring an external ignition box and tuning to function.

So do you or don't you need to tune with NA and mazsport ignition solution?
mysql 08-15-2008, 02:03 PM You can likely get away without tuning it for NA. Your exact results may vary.
dannobre 08-15-2008, 02:22 PM Were your problems with the coils...or the fact that there needs to be more dwell for FI applications...
mysql 08-15-2008, 02:23 PM I can't get into that right now.
quazmosis 08-22-2008, 11:08 AM I seem to have loss of power since the mazsport ignition solution. Where can I find out more about how I can correct this? I'm N/A.
quazmosis 08-22-2008, 11:10 AM ^ I'm pretty sure I've read every thread out there regarding the ignition solution.
rotary.enthusiast 08-22-2008, 12:19 PM A noticeable loss in power? That's not good... I would double check to make sure everything is installed and connected securely and correctly. I can't recall hearing about anybody that is N/A having problems with the coils as-is.
Do you have an AccessPort by chance? MM can give you a flash with an adjusted dwell setting for the Mazsport coils.
quazmosis 08-22-2008, 02:11 PM Now that I'm driving with it more, its appears to be a nonissue anymore. This is what I've noticed.
1. No CEL
2. Right off the bat, my engine seem to be buttery smooth, and VERY quiet now.
3. When driving when I reved it, the RPMS seem to fire right up to redline on the gauge, but it didnt appear like the car was actually doing anything. Not much pull. It was like the Revs didnt match what the car was doing. This was the problem I thought I was having on lack of power.
4. I just hit 30 miles since instal and it appears to be pulling harder now like I assumed it would be. Not a noticeable feeling. I would compare it to the AP crankshaft pulley. Not a fire you back in your seat deal, but a little bit stronger pull throughout the RPMS. Now my car feels like its matching the RPMs.
5. Maybe after installing the Mazsport ignition the ECU does need to adjust itself a little? My car seems back to normal now. I'm going to put on some more miles tonight.
swoope 08-23-2008, 09:01 AM i am hoping that you pulled the battery when you put in the coils. if so it will take a while for your fuel trims to be relearned..

olddragger 08-23-2008, 09:08 AM i run the pettit sc kit with these coils---they were plug and play for me--no problems. now one thing i did was to get a better ground than oem. i ran a much better ground and threw that oem pigtail ground away.

rx8thunder 08-23-2008, 10:20 AM ^ Interesting, could you provide more details/photos about that?
quazmosis 08-23-2008, 08:35 PM Yes I defanatly uninstalled the battery. When installing the ignition. I think I was just freaking out about the ECU learning. I've gone about 120 miles on it, so far and no CEL and its seems ok.
