I just wanted to give you guys a glance at my latest project for the rx8.

The module I built (wrapped in black tape below) controls the factory sunroof circuit and allows the sunroof to be opened and closed with one touch.

The install takes less then 5 minutes and could easily be done by a trained monkey. Only 3 wires, two of which just attach with a bolt and the third uses a wire tap.

The sunroof can still be opened or closed partially by pressing the opposite button once.

Remove map light assembly.

You have to pull it down pretty hard. But yes, only two screws to remove the map light assembly.

Q1. The open function remains unchanged.

Q2. It shuts off 1 second after the sunroof is completely closed. It will not overload the sunroof motor.

O3. It only ties into the full close button. (drivers side button set) However, if the sunroof is fully open, either close button (tilt or full) will close it with one touch.

Q4. The install is really easy.

I'm limited by the boundaries of how the car was designed. What you're suggesting would require require additional wire(s) from the sunroof to the doors.

Also, I inquired in the cost of a printed circuit board for the auto headlight circuit and the cost was way too high. Around $60 just for the blank board. And unfortunately, it's too hard to make each one by hand.

You are absolutely correct. Don't stick your head out the sunroof while closing it! After a set amount of time, the sunroofs internal overload sensor will stop it from damaging the motor, but your neck would hurt by that time.

Another cool mod RR. You just keep making the 8 better! Give us an inch and we'll ask for a mile though...I'm interested in auto climate control like the European models have. According to Stealth it's nigh impossible to fit a US vehicle with auto climate control. Maybe once the 09's hit??? I don't suppose you've looked into this?

In other words: don't stick your head out there, if you do it will try and close but eventually it will stop.
The sunroof does not close with much force so I don't really see this being a major concern.

I HIGHLY doubt people will not buy this just because it doesn't have a failsafe. Like PC said: it's just common sense not to stick your head in there.

Alright, ya'll a tough crowd. I'll redesign it tonight or tomorrow and add a failsafe mechanism. I'm thinking of doing some type of high-side current sensing circuit that will stop the motor when a certain load is reached or exceeded.

When I raised this point it wasn't to put a negative slant on an otherwise well-executed idea, and yes, I wouldn't expect any reasonably intelligent adult to stick his head out the sunroof while engaging the close button. But the reason NHTSA doesn't allow one-touch closure devices is because of children and pets. Actually, let me restate that - they allow it if the device has some kind of pinch protection that auto-reverses. Not long ago certain manufacturers (Ford, for example) used rocker switches for their window operation, which meant that you pushed down to both open and close the windows. There were incidents where children and pets put their head out the window and inadvertently stepped on the switch...

It's not impossible to imagine someone backing their car out into the driveway to clean it or something while the kids are playing - the key is in the ignition on ACC or maybe the engine is running - and a child stands on the seat with their head out the sunroof. If their hand hits the close switch, a very serious accident may occur.

In the litigious country in which most of these would be sold, I wanted to make sure the member who was manufacturing and selling these, along with any buyers, was aware of the potential danger.

I'd be more interested in a driver side switch for "everything open" and "everything closed" It's almost muscle memory now that when I'm parking I use one hand to close the moonroof and one to close both side windows.

Hitting one button to open/close all three would be awesome. MIght be a summer project..

The 8 doesn't- you have to hold the window button up(I should add that I could be mistaken, but in 4 years of owning this car I've never gotten it to do an auto-up, just an auto-down). I'm pretty sure there was a law passed in 2006 about this- at the very least, there was legislation being pushed to make manufacturers remove the auto-up windows because of the danger. I'm trying to find confirmation of this.

This is what separates BMW's from Honda's. If you roll every possible safety feature into a Honda, it'll cost as much as a BMW. Where do we stop. If you want the added features, you have to pay for them. That's why a BMW cost more than a Honda or Mazda.

i think it's a good idea. some ppl have kids and sometimes you might close it and not realize something is blocking the path and this way nothing gets broken. my bmw moonroof has this feature- ie if any object is obstructing the path of it closing, it senses it and re-opens as a fail safe. ie kinda like a kid-safe garage door. :)

Alright, ya'll a tough crowd. I'll redesign it tonight or tomorrow and add a failsafe mechanism. I'm thinking of doing some type of high-side current sensing circuit that will stop the motor when a certain load is reached or exceeded.

It's current sensing. Anyway, I still wouldn't want to get my finger caught in it. Just like I wouldn't want to stick my hand out my Lexus' auto up windows. If someone is honestly worried about getting injured, don't buy it. I take no responsibility if someone gets hurt.

I just wanted to give you guys a glance at my latest project for the rx8.

The module I built (wrapped in black tape below) controls the factory sunroof circuit and allows the sunroof to be opened and closed with one touch.

The install takes less then 5 minutes and could easily be done by a trained monkey. Only 3 wires, two of which just attach with a bolt and the third uses a wire tap.

The sunroof can still be opened or closed partially by pressing the opposite button once.

I am confused as to why you would need this mod. I ahve a 2004 RX-8 equipped with the sunroof. Pressing the button on the driver's side causes the roof to open all the way. If the button is pressed again before the sunroof fully opens, it stops at its current position. Pressing it again casues the roof to continue to open to its full-open position. Pressing the driver's side button when the roof is in the full-open position cause the roof to begin to close; if the button is not pressed agian, it will continue until the roof is fully closed. If the button is pressed during the close cycle, the sunroof stops at that position. Likewise, if the button is pressed again, the roof continues to close from its current position.

I am confused as to why you would need this mod. I ahve a 2004 RX-8 equipped with the sunroof. Pressing the button on the driver's side causes the roof to open all the way. If the button is pressed again before the sunroof fully opens, it stops at its current position. Pressing it again casues the roof to continue to open to its full-open position. Pressing the driver's side button when the roof is in the full-open position cause the roof to begin to close; if the button is not pressed agian, it will continue until the roof is fully closed. If the button is pressed during the close cycle, the sunroof stops at that position. Likewise, if the button is pressed again, the roof continues to close from its current position.

i think i have heard around here somewhere before that some 04's(maybe from other regions/earlier builds?) auto closed from the factory. what i also heard was that they removed this property as a liability if lil jonny stuck his head out the roof and accidentally closed it.(it apparently did not have any load/voltage sensing safety built into it)

but then again, i could have just imagined i heard this, or it could have been the gnomes in my head who made it up...?

most everyone else has the normal open auto, close by holding sunroofs. we're lazy and RR makes great mods.
