I'm limited by the boundaries of how the car was designed. What you're suggesting would require require additional wire(s) from the sunroof to the doors.

Also, I inquired in the cost of a printed circuit board for the auto headlight circuit and the cost was way too high. Around $60 just for the blank board. And unfortunately, it's too hard to make each one by hand.

That's a nice mod.

However, I expect the reason Mazda doesn't have one-touch close on the sunroof or any of the windows is due to a lack of a reverse sensor to back the motor off in the event the window or sunroof contacts something (i.e. a child's head).

Just a safety precaution you might want to mention. Once you press that close button, unless you press the switch again to stop it, it's closing even if something is in the way. Or am I wrong in this?

You are absolutely correct. Don't stick your head out the sunroof while closing it! After a set amount of time, the sunroofs internal overload sensor will stop it from damaging the motor, but your neck would hurt by that time.

Cool - it's hard to set a tone to text but I didn't want you to think I was dissing your modification in any way (I really do think it's a great feature). I work in automotive manufacturing and they hammer us with NHTSA stuff regularly and one of our divisions that manufactures closure systems deals with this stuff all of the time.

I just wanted to make sure anyone with little kids was aware was all. It's the reason the manufacturers were legislated to use buttons that had to be lifted to close a window rather than pushed down, and a lot of the higher end manufacturers have added sensors to reverse the motors when resistance is detected.

Good work!

I wasn't taking it as an insult. You brought up a very good point.

"manufacturers were legislated to use buttons that had to be lifted to close a window rather than pushed down" - also very interesting

Another cool mod RR. You just keep making the 8 better! Give us an inch and we'll ask for a mile though...I'm interested in auto climate control like the European models have. According to Stealth it's nigh impossible to fit a US vehicle with auto climate control. Maybe once the 09's hit??? I don't suppose you've looked into this?

I'm interested in the sunroof mod. I'd be in for a group buy if it's less than $50.

I need at least 15 confirmed buyers before it becomes profitable enough to justify the GB fee.

PM an admin and get the thread title changed. Something closer to, "G/I, NEW mod: One-touch Sunroof!"

another awesome mod roger. does it have a safety failback though? (ie if an obstruction is encountered when closing does it automatically re-open? that would seem like a necessary safety mechanism.)

In other words: don't stick your head out there, if you do it will try and close but eventually it will stop.
The sunroof does not close with much force so I don't really see this being a major concern.

i don't see why you would shove your head out after you press the button to close it. common sense. use it.

Alright, ya'll a tough crowd. I'll redesign it tonight or tomorrow and add a failsafe mechanism.

Rasp: not worth the effort.
I HIGHLY doubt people will not buy this just because it doesn't have a failsafe. Like PC said: it's just common sense not to stick your head in there.

Sell it as-is
