Bought a Borla cat-back early in 2005, tried a raspy nasty midpipe with it, and quickly changed back to the stock cat.
Some of you may have followed my adventures in creative cat modification - removing the second block of catalyst, downstream from the second O2 sensor; my summer upgrade to the Racing Beat 'race' flash has destroyed what little cat material I had left and by September I was getting the inevitable PO-420 codes from my dead cat.
Well, not unexpected, so time to punch out the rest of my honeycomb - I put the empty cat back on, which is now basically two huge resonators.
The sound is terrific. Not loud until you are well into the throttle, not the least bit raspy, and with no metallic ringing I got with the thin-wall tubing of the midpipe.
Granted, the piece still weighs upwards of twenty pounds, but if you can bear the extra weight - this is the best tone I've heard, so far.
Should have done it years ago.
Will try and get a representative audio clip onto Youtube asap....
