Wilson 06-24-2007, 01:25 PM Here is a thread looking for interest in a group buy for this exhaust system. One of the forum members bought one on eBay and is looking to have it copied by a manufacturer. It will require 50 people interested in purchasing before they will build a batch.

User24 06-24-2007, 01:32 PM Correction, two forum members bought one off eBay. And one of the group buys will only require 10 people; this group buy should be up during the early weeks of July. I know this because I am the 2nd forum member. It's waiting for me at the apartment when I return.

just be careful throwing around the group buy talk, if the group buy is not approved by the admins then the thread can get deleted ;)
im glad you are working hard to get this done too.

User24 06-25-2007, 12:46 AM I deleted my own thread last time. Once I find out how much this thing costs, I'll get an approved thread up in the Group Buy center. I already know the procedure and it is quite painless, I just don't have it up yet because I have no pricing info at this time.

ok cool man, sorry we get some many newbs around here
moRotorMotor 06-25-2007, 11:14 AM Can the piping have a slightly sharper bend in it to raise the canisters? It's a little low for most of us.
User24 06-25-2007, 01:31 PM That's one of the questions I'm going to ask when I take it in for the test fitting. In fact, it sounds like you have an idea in mind of what a reasonable clearance is. Therefore, I'm going to ask you to throw it a #: What would be a reasonable # of inches of clearance to achieve?
I'll request that minimum clearance for you.
In addition, I'm going to ask for an exact match: materials, diameter, construction, mufflers. Can't deviate from the original without sacrificing the sound (of the one youtube clip we've all seen).
Anything else I should ask before shelling $100 per hour for labor?
Jedi54 06-25-2007, 01:34 PM someone enlighten me as to what the Helix exhaust looks like and why some people want it soo bad.
(Swoope, I'm multi-tasking at work so no time to search. :D: . Beat ya to it... )

+ the minimal bends (note zero 90 degree bends) allow it to be great flowing
+ it just looks sick!
moRotorMotor 06-25-2007, 01:51 PM I'm not going to give an exact number of inches for clearance. I will mention that just about every other exhaust is curving around the diff/submember and it leaves plenty of room like it should. If it is bent the way it is because the canisters are longer than most offered for the car, then I am willing to sacrifice more sharper bends in the 'Y' tube to adjust for it.
User24 06-25-2007, 02:02 PM The real reasons, popularized by that youtube clip, is that it sounds different than all other available exhausts, it sounds good, and people want to have that sound.
moRotorMotor 06-25-2007, 02:05 PM I do want to add that the Youtube clip is taped in an underground parking lot with a lot of echo. however, most people who have heard it in person agrees that it sounds very similar to the video.
User24 06-25-2007, 02:26 PM I'll take your comments and see what I can do with them. Appreciate it.
With the youtube recording made in nearfield from the exhaust tips, we do have a good idea of the primary tone, irregardless of primary, secondary, etc room reflection points. For example, when you are caught singing in the bathroom, people familiar with you can still recognize your voice, even though there is a mad amount of echo in that environment and vocal reinforcement. Also, irrespective of microphone used, recording technique, volume, encoder format, encoder bitrate, adc, playback dac, playback amplifier and transducers. Let's also not forget the OS, drivers, kernel streaming or ASIO playback method, and software used.
We know the youtube recording is going to be "bassy" due to the garage and its stone wall construction and bass trap nodes, and for the same reason will sound "lighter" out in the open air environment. If that is what you mean, then we just need to adjust our expectations according to the environment.
Chris 06-25-2007, 02:46 PM I just want this exhaust...like yesterday

Just build a time machine then!
User24 07-03-2007, 08:54 AM Q: If I ask for a sharper bend for more ground clearance on my vehicle, what's the best way to have a shop do that? Would it be a new fabricated mandrel bent pipe, or should I be happy with them just working on the existing pipe? The closest mandrel bending services muffler shop is like 4 hours drive, which is why I ask.
