SINGLE-VEHICLE CRASH

Wet road to blame

in driver's death

Las Vegas police partially blamed wet pavement for a fatal crash Tuesday morning on Charleston Boulevard.

The 10:14 a.m. crash near Buffalo Drive killed the 20-year-old driver of a 2004 Mazda RX8 and sent his 50-year-old passenger to University Medical Center, police said.

The car was traveling east when it lost traction, jumped the curb and slammed into two trees and a power box, investigators said.

The passenger, Harold Towne, was treated at the hospital and released.

The unidentified driver, a Reno resident, died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The weird thing is that I bought my RX8 from that sales guy, Harold Towne.

Does anyone know more about the driver from Reno? I only learned about this from a friend that works in the area, and just heard about it.

That is the first death in a RX-8 I have heard, that really is sad.
Do we know if he was a member of our Club?

Wow, how sad. It would be too coincidental not to be a test drive, esp if the accident -- on Charleston Blvd -- is near the dealership.

It makes you wonder ... just how hard do you have to push the RX-8 to lose traction. There was another post here by a guy on a wet road that got cut off, and the responsiveness of the car was just awesome in the difficult circumstances. I wonder if TCS/DSC was turned off in the Vegas accident?

Actually, there was a tragic accident that occurred in Philadelphia on September 7, 2003: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...t+philadelphia

I'm not sure about in warmer weather- but last time I had mine out when leaving the gym I had left DSC fully on because it was a bit damp out ( snow flurries - around 34 degrees IIRC ) and it broke loose (the back end) around a corner in 2nd gear at about 15 +/- - I was surprised the DSC didn't keep it from sliding - so it's not 'fool-proof' - at least at slow speeds when it's cold out. A lady I worked a corner w/ at a BMW autox in Dallas a few years back got killed test driving a M Coupe-missed a shift to 4th and hit 2nd,lost it,hit a fire hydrant. Best not to push a car hard on a test drive since it's an unfamiliar car. I've missed 3rd - 4th in mine after 10K miles and 27 years of driving manuals. Not saying that caused this accident-that's sad news regardless of the circumstances.*edit*-when I pushed it above,it was to see if it would break loose - it didn't catch me by surprise...

I'll agree to pushing the car on test drives! I got the RX8 into a drift pretty easily on a test drive, and I was sold on the stability and control! (sans dsc).

Even with DSC on, if you go 100 mpm into a rated 20 mph curve in the rain.... you can NOT beat the laws of physics.... DSC is to asissit you, not save you from the impossible!

I was meaning to post this but syntrix beat me to it. It actually happened the day it had rained/snowed the night before and the roads were very scary to drive on w/o DSC. He was going wayy to fast for the conditions and the sales guy obviously didn't know about the summer only tires we have on our 8's. I'll try and find the picture i scanned.

AvitalBlue8,
Send pics of the wreck if you have them, I would like to see how the car held up......the driver that was killed was not wearing seat belts the salesman was.

Not very, I've lost traction a couple times on dry roads with DSC off...

I think it is the 1st for a person "in" an RX-8 to die. The article you refer unfortunately killed the driver of the other vehicle. To top it all off, this particular rx-8 driver was showing off and/or possibly racing somebody when the accident occured (he lived) and hopefully will rot in jail..

Just adding in my experiences with the RX-8 in the rain with DSC on.

I've spun the RX-8 in the rain with DSC on. The spin was on the intentional side. It was first rain of the seaon, I think in October. The 8 is the first car that I had DSC (TCS, and ABS) and wanted to see how it works and reacts. The streets were empty so I began making a series of right turn, each time openning the throttle a little more to provoke DCS. Each time it kicked in and it felt like my right rear brake was engaging. Being curious as to when it will fail, I kept pushing. So on one of the corners I openned the throttle about 50% with no counter steer and around came the rear.

So now, even if the pavement is even slightly wet, I tip toe through corners knowing that DSC is not a cure all.

DSC is great, I am into drifting, so I occassionally drift the RX8, but some odd times, you may loose traction such as in taking a corner or turn too fast, or at a bad angle, the DSC works great by limiting the traction loss... it does a correction that not only puts a peace of mind with the driver, but improves safety in many conditions.

Some truck driver dude tried to run me off the fwy once
or at least try to scare me

on my way from LA to Santa Barbara
I didn't see him in my blind spot
even though I checked before merging
so he was probably speeding up
anyways
i cut him on accident
and he kept honking and drove around
and got so mad
so he cut me off in return

and he looks at me in his mirror all pissed and what not
so i'm like "oookay.. yeah.. what's up.. what do you want"
and he think I want to pick a fight
so guess what

He goes around and cuts me off like 4 or 5 times in a row
nearly hitting my van and my passenger each time
and i didn't want to fight back cuz we were going like 60 or 70
so I just tried to remain calm the whole time

Do you think this would be considered attempted vehicular murder or something?

I should have reported him....

I heard of another guy in the US that asked his sober friend to drive him home in his 8, when he was drunk himself. He died
when they crashed due to not wearing any seatbelt, his sober friend survived and wore the seatbelt.
