Tint in the Bay Area/N. California?

Anyone know of some good shops in the area where I can get the windows of a couple cars tinted? Oh and is it true you aren't allowed to have the passenger and driver's side mirrors tinted? Thanks in advance guys

Try doing a search in this forum. There have been several posts regarding places to go in the bay area.

my buddy up in Petaluma can hook you up (BLACKOUT TINT). He'll tint whatever you want. Yes, the fronts are illegal to tint, unless you go super light

Thanks for the tip But I'm also looking for the N. CA area and thought I'd just combine the two ideas into one thread.

Can you give me his contact info and has he done any work with your cars? Are you happy with the result?

CA law wants us to tint at least 75% for the front side windows, nothing for windshield, and anything for the 3 rear windows.

Most cars around here have 30% all around except the windshield.

I had my 2000 Celica , 2002 Civic Si, and the 8 done by him. Very happy with the work. I was charged $190, where as everywhere else wanted $250+ because of the difficult"Corvette type" rear window

Unhappy

sad, i'm on a 4-year lease with my FE because the company pays for it, it has to remain totally and utterly stock! Just a heads up, in the bay area too, Walnut Creek in the east bay. BTW, i could use a little help, i scraped up the front lip spoiler (on those parking blocks) and should probably replace it.

Well...seems like some people are confused about tinting. In short, California law states that it is illegal to tint the windshield, the front driver side window and the front passenger side window. That means, from limo dark tint all the way to clear tint, tint is tint...and there should be nothing on the windows.

The rear driver side window, rear passenger side windows, and rear window is okay to tint.

Remember, just by tinting the windows doesn't mean that you'll get pulled over and ticketed. It just means that it gives the officer probable cause to stop a vehicle. Whether he/she issues a ticket is completely up to them. I know this because I use it as probable cause to stop a car to see if they're drunk, are felons, etc...

I spoke to a cop about tints and he told me that the reason they dont want the front ones tinted is for their safety. They dont want to pull over someone and not know what the driver is doing as they approach. They need a good view of the driver to ensure their safety. I think it is a fair trade but I don't know how other states get away with it.

Yup...that's exactly what happens. Sometimes if the windows are too dark and I can't see, I'll usually use my PA system to tell them to roll down the windows so that I can see them. That way, there won't be any surprises on the other side.

They should make a law that if you have tint, you must roll your windows down, rain or shine, when being pulled over.

I'm not sure that is totally true.... from 26708 CVC
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/cacode...700-26712.html

(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and
transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the
front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the
front seat if the following conditions are met:
(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88
percent.
(2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all
requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49
C.F.R. 571.205), including the specified minimum light transmittance
of 70 percent and the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as
specified in that federal standard.
(3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the
ability of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful
ultraviolet A rays.
(4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the
vehicle, a certificate signed by the installing company certifying
that the windows with the material installed meet the requirements of
this subdivision and identifies the installing company and the
material's manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the
material was installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by
the material's manufacturer certifying that the windows with the
material installed according to manufacturer's instructions meets the
requirements of this subdivision and identifies the material's
manufacturer by full name and street address.
(5) If the material described in this subdivision tears or
bubbles, or is otherwise worn to prohibit clear vision, it shall be
removed or replaced.

And again in 26708.5....

26708.5. (a) No person shall place, install, affix, or apply any
transparent material upon the windshield, or side or rear windows, of
any motor vehicle if the material alters the color or reduces the
light transmittance of the windshield or side or rear windows, except
as provided in subdivision (b), (c), or (d) of Section 26708.

Always carry the vehicle code book in your car. They're like $5 from the DMV. Good ammo

Haha...that might as well be nothing on there if it needs to meet THAT much requirements. But of course, it's not like we will sit there and gauge if "abrasion resistance of AS-14..." :D

But yeah, the vehicle code book is good to have with you if you're afraid that you'll get pulled over for whatever violation is on your car. Just be sure to keep that book the most current year

I once heard a cop complain that anti-lock brakes were a bad idea because they wanted to measure skid marks to see how fast and in what direction a car was going. Just because a cop wants something doesn't mean it's in everyone's best interest.

Using that argument regarding window tint, I'd say the rear windows are even more important because that's how cops get their first look as they approach the vehicle.

Yeah, they should change the law that the cop has a right to demand the rolling down of windows before they approach the car so that we could all tint our windows anyway we want :D

Works fine for both sides, right?
