Thanks for those great pics, I'll link the folks over at RX7Club to these pics also. There was a GREAT turnout, there's a lack of pictures b/c everyone was practically one to a car and had no passsenger to shoot pics during the drive. When we got onto the 154? onramp.. we should of all pulled over and taken a group shot of the caravan, that would have been a great place to do it. Jeff had his fender mounted camera working udring the drive, so I'll let you guys know when that footage is available.
Jedi, YIKES! thanks for being a tropper and still going on this 300+mile cruise with us all! (Next time we'll stop for Carl's Jr instead of meatballs.. lol!)

Here's what happened: (long story but worth the read for everyone)
3 of us left OC yesterday morning to meet up with everyone in Ventura. Right as we were approaching the 405 / 101 N interchange, I heard what sounded like something hitting the undercarriage of my car...BAM!!!
First thoughts: OH ****, I ran something over on the road. Problem was, I knew I didn't see anything on the road...
As luck would have it, one of the cars missed the on ramp to the 101N so we quickly pulled over on the shoulder of the 101 to wait for him to meet up with us: It was then I knew something was seriously wrong with my car. As I came to a stop, I heard this grinding / rumbling noise and I could feel my car shaking really bad. I couldn't figure out exactly what was wrong and the side of a busy freeway was no place to start inspecting my car.
About 15 minutes later we were all getting off the freeway at our destination and that's when I KNEW I was in for a bad day. Getting off the freeway, the noise got even WORSE and the car was shaking even worse. (I started to panic) We quickly found a gas station to pull into and that's when we noticed that my front left caliper was RIDING on TOP of my ROTOR!!
We jacked the car up and noticed that the top bolt holding the caliper in had FALLEN OUT and the bottom one was on the verge of coming out as well!! (that must have been what I heard hit the bottom of my car!)
Hmm, wtf to do 80 miles from home at 7 am with a busted caliper! Fortunatley the damage to the rotor and caliper wasn't too bad at this point so we went about trying to find a way to fix the car.
Long story short: We drove to the nearest Mazda / Subaru dealership only to find out the parts department didn't have a replacement. It was then the service guys tore their shop apart trying to find a bolt that could possibly fix my car temporarily. We had told them about our cruise that morning and they were determind to get my car back on the road in time. A BIG thanks to Subaru's Master Technician who found something in his personal tool box that ACTUALLY matched the size and thread of my car's calipers.
We were able to get my car back in shape JUST as the caravan was about to pull onto the freeway to begin their cruise!
I'm removing the bolt this morning (after washing my car) and I'll have my RX-8 towed to the dealership on Monday for further inspection / repair.
Lesson for all: Check those bolts! My car is only 7 months old with 8,000 miles and no brake jobs... those bolts should not have come loose.
Also, a HUGE thanks to my fellow forum members who were with me through this ordeal: Newcastle and Spicy Carribean Boy... Without you guys I would have been stranded on the side of the road and I would have missed the cruise. Thanks guys!

Damn Jorge! What luck! When a little birdie told me something had happened tour your baby I immediatley thought the worst. Then when I saw the words TOTALLED I got that sinking feeling in my chest. Hell it's not even my car.
Anyway glad to hear everything worked out ok and no one as injured and there was no serious damage.

hey jorge,
am relieved to hear that ur car is ok and u made the cruise safe & sound. u didn't happen to remove the calipers when painting them? 'cuz the only thing i can think of is maybe they weren't re-fastened tight enough? also, did u take ur car in for the heat shield recall last year? usually the dealer still does a quickie inspection of everything b4 giving the car back to u. on mine, i read the work order and they apparently checked all the fluids, brakes, tire pressure etc. even tho those weren't part of the work itself.
regardless tho... am happy to hear ur car is ok and the cruise went off well... hopefully i will be able to join u guys next year. and, i'll see u guys either next week for the auto-x or for the next meet. rock on!

Tigger: Thanks bro for looking out for me. Nice to know people care for each other's cars on here.
XDeedubbx: Yeah, I dodged a bullet on this one! Just glad it wasn't a lot worse
Detrich: Thanks Detrich! Yeah, I did take them off when I painted my calipers BUT I had Mazda inspect my work that week to make sure I'd put everything back on correctly. I've actually had my brakes inspected 3 times by the dealership since I keep complaining about the brake squeal... My car was built after the recall so I didn't have to have the heat shield work done on my car.

My car was towed to the dealership this morning for futher inpection / repair.
Such a creepy feeling to watch your car get loaded onto a flat bed.
When the tow truck driver pulled up at the house, the first words out of his mouth were, "So, did you flood the car??"

I installed Raybestos Cermaic brake pads yesterday and have yet to hear a squeal. I know it's probably too early to tell but, i'll keep you guys posted if they do squeal later in the future.
