Yeah, I hope it passes....it is just one thing I've never had to worry about with any car/truck I've ever owned...even my first car which was a beater Toyota pickup. It smoked like crazy but passed smog easily. I guess the smoke it was blowing out the rear was "good" smoke...at least not the bad particulates that they measure for....
We swapped catalytic converters last night. Ghost had my stock catalytic converter on his car when he pulled his custom single tipped exhaust out....so, it was basically me just getting my pipe back. He now has the RP Supercat....and makes his stock exhaust sound like an older FC RX7...the way a rotary should sound.
Put a big gash in my head when the rachet fell off the nut and hit me in the head. It was some pretty big pain...and when I went up to feel what I had done, blood was all over my hand. Went inside to see the damage and it was about an inch long. Spent the rest of the night bleeding on myself, thinking it was sweat running down my face from the work.
Changed the trans and diff fluid, and plan on putting new front brake pads on tonight if they are delivered and on my door step when I get home....with the idea that the car should be ready to be at the smog/mechanic shop on Friday or Saturday.
They are finalizing their loan paperwork now, and should have cash on hand if everything goes well with the mechanic.
Car is being sold at 15.3, including the swap of the cat, new front brake pads and new trans/diff fluid. I had an oil change just two weeks ago and the car hasn't seen much driving since it is no longer my daily driver.
I have been through the emotion of "almost" selling this car three times now. It is heart wrenching to think it may be the last time I see it, but also gut wrenching to wait for fricken results from a smog check.

sounds like a fun night!
why did you change the diff and trans fluid... the stuff you had in there is by no means ready to be swaped out.??????
hopefully the cat does it. if not then I would turn to plugs.. maybe one of those bottles of "guarenteed to pass smog" from wal-mart.
if your real concerned about it, make sure the car is nice and hot when you drop it off. beat it up a little right before you drop it off. (and hope they smog it right then.)
...... I am sure the cat was the problem though.

When I had the mechanic do the pre-sale inspection (for the last buyer) there were some items that he listed as things that needed to be done. So, in the attempt to show good faith and good will, I wanted to hand the car over in ready-to-go condition. The fluids that were in the tranny and diff were last done when the new trans went in (at about 69,000 miles)...so, the fluid had about 18,000 miles on it. The diff fluid looked fine, but the trans fluid was rather nasty.
The other recommendations were for front brakes and front rotors. The rotors will be fine for one more pad swap so didn't buy rotors. Still waiting for delivery of my brake pads, should be here today....so i should have one more night of wrenching.
I guess I just feel the car is an extension of me, and who I am. I don't want to deceive anyone about the car, so I've always been honest and up-front about the car. The positives, as well as pointing out the flaws and making recommendations like getting the car aligned. It was nice to have the discussion of the sand storm this time....as the buyer said he has had to replace several wind shields in cars due to same reason. He used to live in our area and moved (like many due) to get out of the wind. It was nice to have someone understand that I take good care of my car, but circumstances beyond my control damaged my vehicle (like all the road crap that has hit my MS front bumper......or Rodney backing his Prelude into my rear bumper).....etc.

You would never make it as a used car salesman.

hey, I'm all for that. I just dont think it was time to change the fluids thats all. but it does make a great selling point. "ALL fluids changed". nothing wrong with it, I just didnt see whay, thats all.
when I sold my car the guy asked about the fluids, it was nice to say that all the fluids were brand new.
the only car I hid a little truth from was the RX-8. there were many things I did not mention. Like it used to get raced, or that it had so many mods on it at one time, or that it had a RB flash, or that the tranny was new, or that the brakes were new... etc.
With only 19k miles it should have not needed all of that. How do you explain having new brakes with only 19k miles? (cause it ws one hell of a 19k miles)
I am confident that the car was in GREAT mechanical working order at the time of sale considering almost everything was new. figure the rotors, sway bars, springs, struts, flywheel, air filter... etc had MAYBE 3 or 4 thousand miles on them before they were removed and sat on a shelf for the remainder of the time I owned the car. then you add all the new parts like the tranny, pads, fluids... it really was in "perfect" condition when I sold it.
but still, in your situation being as you are selling it as a modded car, I think the route of honesty is the best. I know as a buyer I dont mind hearing some of the bads. it makes me feel they are being honest and telling me everything. and the couple of bads you have are really not THAT bad. its an awsome car that has had its use and you are taking care of some of the maintinece items. it makes the buyer feel that it is ready to go and wont need a ton of money in "stupid" cost. It can also make the buyer feel you have taken care of it the entire time you have owned it.
that said, it was not time to replace your fluids... so there. neener neener.
