Mare Island/Las Vegas

Hey guys,
I know this is off-topic, but I could really use some advice. I live in Florida, and am going to medical school in the Fall possibly in one of these two places. I've never been to either - does anyone have an opinion on which is a better place to live? Thanks in advance!

Tough call, since I only know Vegas.

Cost of living out here is cheap! But the summers get 110+, but it's a dry heat! Lots of entertainment, lot's of outdoors/wilderness stuff to do!

Local paper is:

http://www.lvrj.com

Check it out a bit! Do the research, and let me or the other vegas peeps know if you have any specifics!!!!

Thanks syntrix - looking at the paper is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that.

I didn't know Vegas had a MEd School
I goto UNLV for pre-med, and people always talk about UNSOM located in RENO
Although I went to the pre-med orientation in UNLV and they said that over 90% of UNLV students who apply to medical schools around the nation get into at LEAST one school, wheras only 40% of non-UNLV students apply to med school and get into at least one.
So there you have it
anymore questions, feel free to ask.

Mare Island, as in former Naval base? Tuoro University?

I'd say Mare Island, hands down. Las Vegas is much too hot and dry for my taste. Also, what else is around besides Las Vegas? At M.I. you are near the entire SF Bay area, and a stone's throw from Napa and Sonoma valleys. The region has it all.

See, people know very little about Vegas. Within an hour or less from or in the city:

24 hour entertainment.

Wineries.

Snowboarding/Skiing

Wakeboarding/Boating

Racing (LVMS, and SMMP)

Etc, etc etc......

Oh wait, stay in CA, we are starting to grow pretty fast out here!

There is a medical school opening in Las Vegas in Fall 2004 - it is a branch of Touro University, which is also the school on Mare Island. While I likely will be going to school in FL, I did apply to Touro and I had to pick which campus I was interested in. By the way, Doug, proctology is a medical specialty like any other - proctologists go to medical school. And no, that's not what I'm interested in. Thanks to everyone else for the responses.

EDIT: Well I see now that Doug is banned, so I guess he won't be seeing my response after all. Oh well, good riddance.

Personally I wouldn't pick Vegas, I used to live there and as the saying goes "its a nice place to visit....." If you like to gamble at all do not pick Vegas.

If you do pick Vegas be careful where you live, there are some BAD parts of Vegas. I know I used to be a meter reader for the Las Vegas Valley Water District and we had to go into those BAD areas. One of the people I worked with found a guy shot in the head and more than a few of us had guns pointed at us.

Other parts are reall nice and safe.

So if I like seafood, I shouldn't live in the Bay?

What town doesn't have BAD areas?

Idaho sounds like a fun place to visit

Gambling and Eatting are not the same! I've known many people that let gambling ruin thier lives, of course it depends on the person. While I lived in Vegas I never went to the Strip unless some one came to visit.

Yes, most towns do have bad areas, but unlike most of the towns I've lived in I never really saw the BAD areas. Don't get me wrong I like Vegas, at least parts of it

I guess my opinion is a little skewed because of my job and the things I saw and had to deal with.

Idaho is a nice place to visit, if you ever get the chance to come up this way let me know and I would be happy to show you the sites. To the south we have Sand Dunes, to the north we have Mountains, and lots of outdoor activities.

...and I have known people that have let eating ruin their lives!

My point is that anecdotal statments are great! However, it would be nice to show some actual facts between the different areas

Such as [fictitious]: I live in city XXX and there were many killings. It seems as if there were killings all over the place. A story on the local news website shows that there were 3,000 killings in 6 months in city XXX.

I'm not saying all of Vegas is BAD, read above. I'm just saying you have to be careful of where you live. I would say the same thing about anyplace I've lived. If some one would have clued me in when I lived in Vegas I would not have lived where I did. (Eastern and Washington area)

I've moved around alot in the past 10 years (military) and I've had the chance to see and live in places I never thought I would. I would have loved it if some one clued me into the problems of the various areas.

So far Idaho is the second "safest" place I've lived (Okinawa was better). All of the other places I've lived there are areas I would not go if I didn't have to (parts of North Vegas included).

And in this particular case noahprtlnd is asking for opinions.
