Blurry Vision...

In case anybody notices the blur, I'm the 2004 Titanium Grey 8 that's always speeding down Sand Canyon and Irvine Blvd.

BTW...anybody think there's just way too many speed traps in Irvine?

IPD is nice to me, I revved next to one of the patrol cars, the police officer in sun glasses looks over and smiles at me, then ofcourse the light turns green and he wouldn't go, so I faked a stall and acted like I am turning my ignition key, the moment he goes forward i stepped on the gas and got behind his patrol car, then I just tailgated him all the way to the 5 north

fun times

yup, the cost of a high-end radar detector is more or less what one speeding ticket would cost so it's worth it in the long run.
The best thing to remember with those is that you can't just rely on them. The detectors are there as a back-up in case you happen not to see the police officer.

The best radar detector is still the one right between our ears.

If you decide to ask Santa for one: I'd either recommend an Escort 8500 (or 9500i if you feel like spending a bit more) or the Valentine 1
  • NgoRX8 has the 8500 and loves it
  • I have the 9500 and I couldn't be happier
  • Valentine 1 always scores well in consumer reports

Question...

Anybody think it's worth it to trade up?

My 2004's warranty runs out in a few months, so I'm thinking of trading it in for a 2008. Any thoughts? I'm feeling like my 2004 might be trouble prone once the warranty runs out.

So would it be worth it? Does anyone know if there's been any major changes to the RX-8 since 2004?

buy an extended warranty. Lots of ppl forget that you can always buy them during ownership, not just when you originally buy the vehicle

I've been driving in Irvine for around 3 years.. never been pulled over. But they do go on raids sometimes..

Oh and do you guys think we can use top floor of Spectrum parking lot? Or I wonder if we can use that large parking lot next to Mazda HQ.

Very few police departments use radar anymore. At the moment, police are using LIDAR. This is basically laser(Ir) radar. It is very directional and it is aimed at the motorists license plate or any reflective surface on the vehicle. (like a laser pointer)

The high end detectors, like the V1, will detect light in the Ir spectrum.... 850nm and up however, since the the laser is line of sight operation your detector has to be mounted very high to see out the windows. Since the laser is pointed at the license plate, and is very directional, you're not guaranteed that detector will sense the signal given it is up so high.

Here is a something I made a few months ago to test devices like this.

It operates at 900-940nm spectrum with variable frequency control.

Bottom line, these units do work, but don't give yourself a false sense of protection with them.

^^^ yup! Rodger this that one right on the head.

When it comes to mounting the detector, there are a few different options / opinions. Mount it HIGH if you want good RADAR detection. OR Mount it LOW for good LASER detection.

When you see police officers pulled over on the side of the road, they most likely just have their radar on and are waiting for you to go ZOOMING by. When you do, it gives them a speed.
Motorcycle Cops usually prefer the LASER since it's easy for them to point and shoot. If you're ahead of a pack and get laser'd, it won't matter what kind of radar detector you have; it'll be too late.

The beam width of LIDAR can be as small as 22 inches at 1000 feet. You can see that if a cop was aiming at your front plate, your detector, thats mounted by your review mirror would not sense the signal. Also, unlike RADAR, LIDAR does not radiate the signal. If your detector does sense the signal and warn you.... it's already too late.

yup!
That's why it's never smart to speed if you don't have any cars around you.
I've had a pack of cars near me and all of a sudden I got a LASER alert!
I looked up and sure enough, there was a motorcycle cop pointing his lidar gun at us. (not sure if he was aiming at me or the guy next to / in front of me)

Radar (most commonly Ka band around here) is much easier to pick up. I'll be driving on the 261 toll road and all of a sudden it'll pop up. I know, that as soon as I get around that corner, I'm going to see a CHP officer.
