Did I get a good deal?

ANYWAYS,
BACK OUT OF THE DEAL NOW!!!
There are hundreds of other dealers who will offer better prices!
Just shop around several dealers.
It's lots of hard earned money you are talking about.
And most salespeople will rip off your arm and leg and squeeze the living juice out of your wallet if they knew you had some extra cash to spare.
Just goes ta show ya... some folks don't really care what they pay and/or are too shy to negotiate. This is how the dealership gets the terrazzo floors and the cherry wood reception desks.
But then again, maybe the definition of a good deal really is "..a deal the buyer is happy with". Gr8_8 doesn't seem to really want the help, or maybe can't bring himself to do what needs to be done. So, whatever......

Mary, are you male or female?
If you are male, I would recommend you pay $500 more.
If you are female, then give me just the price of the car they offered WITHOUT tax and registration/license (I can't deal with the out the door quote).

Actually, if you pay $250 over invoice in LA, you're getting ripped off.

I knew they are around invoice but I would think 250 above invoice would still be acceptable,.
Myself, I got S-plan minus 500(college rebate) minus 250 (negotiated). Timeframe thanksgiving weekend.

Shift_zoom8 :
The price of the car with the spoiler included is $31,182.00. So is that still good?
oh and btw im a FEMALE.
MSRP Invoice
Base $25180 $23274
GT package $4700 $4043
Rear Wing Spoiler $355 $285
Destination $520 $520
Total $32655 $29757
Destination is a flat charge so no difference between MSRP and invoice there, and you MUST add it in. Check the car's sticker just to make sure the official MSRP for that car is $32655 (to verify we've taken into account everything on that car). In the LA area right now, you should be able to get your car for no more than $29757. There is also a College Grad $500 rebate that ends on 3/1/04. I'm not certain if you must be a grad or currently in school to qualify. Kaliken would probably know more specificly. But here's what I know for certain. If you qualify, then subtract the $500 from the above invoice price ($29757 - $500 = $29257). if you qualify, do not let the dealer try to bullshit you by saying you can't have invoice PLUS the $500 rebate, because you absolutely can and should. The invoice and rebate are two separate things. Also, even if there wasn't a rebate, you could still get something UNDER the invoice. For years, dealers have acted as if "invoice" is actually what dealers pay for the car. That is simply untrue; in other words, invoice IS NOT actual dealer cost. Dealers probably pay over $1000 LESS than the invoice!!!! So, in reality, asking merely invoice is not unreasonable at all.
We're lucky in southern California. There are a ton of cars on the lots and it's definitely a buyer's market. Call around. I called over 10 places and narrowed down to 3.
I am telling you the truth. DO NOT buy for over invoice. If you qualify for the college rebate, then DO NOT buy for over $500 UNDER invoice. Even if you don't qualify for the rebate, you can still negotiate $500 UNDER invoice.
The rest is up to you.
Oh by the way, I noticed you said something about installing the spoiler. Does that car come with the wing spoiler already installed (so that the MSRP sticker has it included)? Or are you having the dealer install it after the fact? It's true that if the car doesn't come with an accessory and you want the dealer to install it, you have to figure in labor cost. But the installation for the spoiler is so damn easy and fast that you should negotiate no more than 1 hour of labor (each dealer service department charges a different rate but I think it should be around $65 per hour). There are some other complications that you didn't mention. For example, usually the sales department would need to personally talk to the service department to make sure the labor portion of the deal is cool with the service department. In fact, usually the sales department will refuse to negotiate with you directly on accessories that require an installation charge. Instead, they'll push you to buy the car as is and then have you talk to the service department on your own. However, it sounds like the sales department at this dealership threw it all in for you. Why? Because they're making PLENTY of profit off the quoted price of $31182 that the labor for the wing installation isn't even an issue.
Maybe you could allow them to take some of the college rebate back in exchange for the installation charge. Or, if you don't qualify for the rebate, add on an appropriate amount to the invoice price. Or whatever else you can think of.
Regardless, you should be able to purchase the car for WAY LESS THAN $31182.

THANKS FOR THE HELP shift_zoom8;
I really appreciate this :p Im doing this all on my own, plus this will be my very first car (and buying experiance ) U seem to know you're stuff, I wish you would come along and negotiate the deal for me.
BTW the spoiler is already on the car. It was kinda complicated since Im doing this through internet sales. Have you heard of Cars Direct.com? Well they look for the car you are looking for and then they buy it from the dealer and you buy from them; supposedly at the lowest price (since they have buying power they can get the car for less and supposedly you end up benefiting from that)
So I havent even seen the car. First they gave me a quote supposing that the car had no spoiler and the dealer would have to install it. Now they tell me that the car already has the spoiler so disregard that labor quote. But the new quote doesn't change much at all. Im gonna have to shop around more on this.
Thanks for the help though, I have learned a lot, I didn't even know about the college rebate. :D

See, THAT is important information. DO NOT do Cars Direct.com. That explains the higher quote.
Call dealerships and ask for the internet or fleet manager. Smaller dealerships will have one person serving both roles. Large dealerships might have a different person handling each, in which case it doesn't really matter whom you talk to.

MARYDOLL:
listen very carefully to what shift_zoom8 had to say. In the LA area there are plenty of dealers that will sell at invoice (or $300 - $500 above or below invoice).
Do not even approach paying MSRP. If you spot a dealer that has the car you want with the options you want, you can always find out the invoice price (as well as any rebates, dealer incentives, college grad incentives, low interest rates, etc) via Edmunds.com or KBB.com.
Call the dealer - ask for the fleet mgr - tell him/her they have the car you want and will they sell it at invoice (including license, doc fess and registration) but plus tax. Some will OK the deal, others may sell it at invoice PLUS all the regulatory stuff.
Be patient and you wil get a good deal.
Good luck.

I have also seen a few dealers across the country selling for a little over Invoice (one in Phoenix for $500 maybe) with choice of cars. With even $500-$1,000 shipping from anywhere in the states you would still get a better deal.
so a little clarification of the College rebate... If I remember correctly you need to be at most 2 years out of college. or within one year of graduating.
all I needed to do was bring a copy of my diploma and they added 500 bucks to my down payment. Its really considered a cash back so it didn't really come off the so called negotitated price. So I still had to pay taxes on my original negotitated price. bummer. still its free money. try to get it if you can!
good luck!

Thanks to everyone for their postings. I was going to just settle for $750 over invoice that I got through AutoByTel because I thought that was a good deal.
After reading this forum, I emailed a bunch of dealers and ended up with $250 over invoice. I probably could've knocked it down some more as a couple of dealers were desperate for me to visit them in person and wouldn't quote over email.
Since I was happy enough with the $250 over with very little time spent, I had settled everything over email while at work. Not a single phone call or negotiation session with a slimy salesman!! Definitely the way for a quick hassle-free buying experience.
Can't wait to pick up the keys!!
