CA-How long does it take to get tags?

I bought my car in June. I still haven't received my tags. Is this normal?

This is the first car I've bought in CA. In both AZ and MD, you get tags within 30 days of buying the car.

Running a car without tags just seems like it's asking for trouble (as if going 80+mph in a little red sports car isn't enough cop bait).

Nah, in California, it can take from 2 months to 3 months to get your tags. That's how it's been in Cali. I know of some members that already have had their tags, but haven't even put on their license plates. Oh wells :P

What do they give you for the mean time? Do you just run tag-less or put a "tag applied for" temp-plate?

It depends on the dealer... but usually just a sticker in the front window, or a copy of the registration application (with personal info hidden) in the front window.

I didn't get a plate for 6 months once... never had a problem. Don't worry about it at all.

****, I know some people who have gone a year or so without plates. Did they receive them well before that time? Yes. With "photo" tickets, they did not install their plates...

Um. I bought mine 6 months ago and moved from Alabama. I don't have the connivence of dealer stickers... I guess the registration application will do it.

You should get a temporary operating permit (in california) and receive your registration in 30-90 days.

I was given my window sticker a week before picking up my car (I was waiting for it to be delivered). When I got my car I never put it on. I've also taken off my cheap dealer plates, completely removed the front plate, and put a custom plate frame on the back. I plan to keep it this way for a while. I've also driven by, infront and behind a few cops and haven't been stopped or anything. Even when I get my plates I'm going to keep them off for a while.

Update. I still hadn't received the tags by Thanksgiving, so I called the dealer. He said that the materials were inadvertantly lost and were just resent to the DMV that week, so I should get it in a week or so.

By March, I still hadn't gotten the license plates. Finally, I was pulled over twice in one week for driving without plates. I call the dealer again. Apparently, the first guy was lying through his teeth. The materials were sent to the DMV the day of purchase and the tags were mailed to me in July! I never received them, of course.

So I finally went to the DMV today and picked up my new tags.

PS the DMV doesn't like the word "tags". They are license plates. When I was calling them to determine what I should do, the operater had no idea what I meant when I said "tags".
