Bay Area Cruise - March 6th - Calaveras Road

Hey all, just letting any fellow Bay Area 8 owners that there will be a cruise on March 6th.

This was started over at the 7 forums, and I'm bringing it over into the 8 forums.

The planned date is March 6th, hopefully it will be nice and sunny that day, and not pouring rain like it is right now.

The decided meet point would be Dave & Busters at the Great Mall.

The road we've planned to cruise on is Calaveras Road, which the base of the road is right down the street from D&B.

The only thing that has not been decided on is the time we'd go. Approximately 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. is the meet time. More input is needed from more people to get a flexible time set in place.

Also, this is open to everyone (excluding civics, haha), so if you know anyone that would like to go, bring them along!

UPDATE

Sunday March 6th

Dave & Busters

940 Great Mall Drive
Milpitas, CA 95035

Meet up from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Rain or Shine

Don't trip potato chip, my fender has a large dent, I have a shady paint job on my hood, and decals on the back, I'm sure you'll be fine lol. You must remember the RX7 crew doesn't usually have the most extreme decked out rides, so I hear o.O

personally, i love the FDs.. but the FCs.. meh. honestly, most people dont get to choose which car they get, most times.. in my case, it was either my RX8.. or a jeep grand cherokee.. the difference in price was $1.5k. I think i made the better choice

march 7th is monday. I assume you are referring to march 6th? the only problem i personally have with that is that its too much money. Of course the fee is to pay for using the track they built, I get that.. But personally, I just want to go on a cruise on a beautiful day and enjoy the scenery and what not, take some pics, etc. Theres a fine line between racing and cruising.. oh and its way the **** up there 3 hours away for me! that'd be 4 hours for some of the santa cruise folk.. not trying to bash on ya, but some people just want to cruise

so a tank of gas to get there
a tank of gas to get back home
a little bit more on top of that for running it on the track

equals = money I'll have to put toward my speeding ticket if i dont win

and i read in your thread that its a safe course and all that good stuff.. but I wouldnt be the only runner on the track.. I cant afford to run into a $85,000 Porsche.

just sayin. but thanks for the post

I was thinking the 6th was a saturday. I will be at the track on sat 5th and sun 6th. Just a friendly envite to anyone who want to come up to Thunderhill.

Yes track days get expensive, the $125 for the track is the cheap part. I burn through about 20 gal of fuel on the track alone = $75. A tank of gas for my truck to trailer it up $75. A quart of premix $5 (omp sohn adaptor) Add in another $30 for brake pad wear, $50 for tires ( I use hoosier take offs, half the cost and only 15-20% used up)

It gets pricy, but it is still cheaper then getting a speeding ticket and having your rates go up, or worse getting in a wreck in an uncontrolled area.

There are risk to going to the track too, but I have been to 15+ track days and have seen 0 car to car collisions and only 2 solo accidents. 1 was in a real race and 1 was in the advanced group. No injuries and no speeding tickets.

A cruise and track day are two completly different things. I like to do both and I respect that fact that track days are not for everyone.

I will be at Leguna Seca in April too, that should be closer for most Bay Area Guys.

If you think 3-4 hours ofdriving is bad, I will also be going to Buttonwillow in April. That is about 6-7 hours of driving for me.

Its an expensive hobby. I work hard, so I play hard while I have the time and money.

I wish everyone Happy and Safe Motoring.

Thats fine with me.

A motorcycle helmet can be bought for under $100 or borrowed from a friend.

It sounds like racing isn't really your thing, but doing the driving school is a great way to improve your car control and really feel what your car can do but in a safe way. Just something to consider.

Next top racer, lol.

Most racers start out paying for everything out of their own pocket but with a race car not their DD. Spec miata racing is a great way to start. Its fairly affordable (as far as racing goes) they are easy to work on and its still competative. Time attack is another good venue to start with and with less risk because its not wheel to wheel racing.

When did everything not cost money? Maybe in ancient rome chariet races, but it could cost you your life instead. HAHA

i know right man? i used to chariot race all the time. at least then having spiked wheels didnt mess with how the ride felt.. true story

but i really do feel i might be, i have all the necessities personally to be so, but.. no money to drop into my car. its already bad that my sports car is my DD, and a lot of stop n go gets me low milage too.. as much as you dont see many RX8s on the track.. there may be reasons behind that.. this is one of the more expensive cars compared to, idk.. Mustangs and Camaros.. comparatively, everything for that, from performance upgrades to body kits, its about a third of the price of something on our 8s. it disappoints me

There are certain venues where you see a lot of rx8's Autocross being one of them. Most weekend warriers use what is cheap and easy to work on, and or they turn a high mileage DD and turn it into a dedicated track car. So give it a few more years and you will see more and more rx8's on the track. The exception is the porsche guys, they will take a brand new $100k+ gt3rs, modify it and race it. Their brakes cost more then our cars.

If you really want to get into racing, you need a cheap dedicated track car. Something like an 80's rx7 or miata. You can find a lot of spec miata's that are race ready for under $10K, sometimes as low as $5-6.

http://www.racingjunk.com/category/1...pec_Miata.html

A race ready rx8 would cost you $20-25K+

well, im certainly learning a lot more.. I would love to look into it one day.. but i think the first step right now is to pay off my parents on my 8 as of right now.. not to mention the fact that i'd have to deal with more insurance if i drove a race ready car on the road, additional maintenance, parts, etc. this will take me many years regardless just to save up for something like that..

but i've seen a brand new porsche up close and those brakes just pop out at me, first thing. they're so huge

You dont drive a race car on the street, not legaly anyways. Most guys with race cars have a pickup as a DD so they can tow their race car to the track. Maybe a beater to save some money on gas too.

I have passed plenty of those porsches and I have yet to find one that will out brake me on the track. Its better and faster to be a great driver in an average car then an average driver in an amazzing car.
