So, is there a "caravan"?
Where are y'all staying?

We'll caravan RCCAZ style - all rotaries. Tim is working on securing our hotel availability for RCCAZ Members at RCCAZ Member discounted rates of course

I don't have more details yet but I DO have the time scheduled off work. I can't WAIT!

I need some tires tho...both rears are in the red rating and at the wear bars. Suggestions?? I was thinking about shoring up my suspension too with some new shocks.

Tires are a personal thing. Anyone who recommends one will get shot down by someone else.
I use Nittos on the '8, I have Yokos on the Miata and I like Falken and Toyo as well.
For shocks, you can't go wrong with the Tokico D-Spec. They are adjustable and built by the company that makes the OEM shocks on the '8.

For a hotel, This is where I want to stay:

Doubletree Hotel Irvine Spectrum
Orange County Area
90 PACIFICA AVENUE
Irvine, CA 92618

You can walk there from Mazda.

It would be nice if we hotelled (sp?) with the other Sevenstock folks this time. I did miss meeting with the other out of town folks. I was hoping to get to meet Rotarygod and those Texans.

I do have to admit that the parking garage was pretty nice where we did stay. It made me feel a little better about leaving the cars. And they might have stayed cleaner down there.

We (the RCCAZ folks) stayed at the DoubleTree Santa Ana last time. If it is layed out anything similar it would be nice (I know, fat chance).

Great recommendation on the Hotel - I'll pass that to Tim. Much appreciated.

Tires - I've just passed 30k mi on my stockers if you can believe that. I'm on borrowed time, of that I am sure. I had wondered about Yoko's (is it Yokohama?) on mine, and have read about folks who really liked the Nittos. I'm not wanting to sacrifice stick that would would be any less than the Potenzas. I have much research ahead of me I am afraid. Oy. NO kidding on the shocks - they build our OEMs? What does adjustable mean exactly...I thought 'adjustable' was only for springs and sways?

Pool - hit the Tire Rack site. I used that for the tires I bought for the 1st gen. The BF Goodrich g-Force Sports. I figured the tires will not see much weather and I wanted inexpensive, cause the kid will just chew them up anyway.

I like what I see. I have not driven on them yet. I am leaning towards BF Goodrich T/A KDW's for the 8. But I have time to change my mind. Boxcar has the KDWs I think, write him and see how he is doing with them.

I really loved the aggressive look of the tread on Boxcar's tires. I forgot about his new ones. I wonder if I still have that email he sent out.

Can you believe he's been garaging his 8? Pfhhhhhhht he hasn't put much if any miles on those new tires. Damn shame!

Pool- get over there and take his car for a ride. It is almost the same car as your's... except for where it is different!

Maybe he will talk you into some wheels too!

2x on the Tire Rack, though I use Discount Tire Direct, too. Cheaper than the stores.

Sevenstock is in a different location this year, so the hotels from last year might not apply.
I've never been, so I don't know.
The hotel I pointed out is literally 800 feet from Mazda.
Mazda HQ is just to the right of the green arrow on this map, the Doubletree is the "Y" shaped building to the left:

Sorry if I confused things... I liked the attributes of last years hotel. I looked a Google too and the DoubleTree MazdaManiac pointed out looks very good.

I was dreaming of a parking garage....

Anyway, too early to book a room?

Its not too early, but it might pay to see if we can get enough people to make reservations to get a group rate.

I know that everyone is eager to get the Sevenstock 9 caravan list started, so I'll contact a few hotels tomorrow (Friday) to see what I can't get firmed up. Unofficially, SS9 organizers told me Tuesday that they were signing a contract this week for discounted rooms and the Sevenstock Banquet with the traditional Hilton locale, which is just a few miles down the road from our traditional CASA, the DoubleTree Santa Ana (201 E. MacArthur). Last year I think we paid around $79 a night (including parking).

Since DoubleTree owns Hilton, DoubleTree will usually match the rate that other out of town rotorheads are paying at Hilton plus throw in free covered parking (usually a $15 per day add on). The parking is truly a perk since the cars are not visible from the street. The Hilton's parking lot is Open Air which can turn your car into a moist mess in late October if an evening Marine layer (i.e., FOG) rolls in. Also, for those of you who love to party, the DoubleTree is next door to a hot little SAKE bar. I think Mac might have a story or two to share about last year

Anyway, I want to thank M2 (Mazda Maniac) for looking into the the DoubleTree next to Mazda HQ. No matter where we stay, it looks like some travelling will be involved back and forth from the event to the Banquet, so I'll post up our options tomorrow and we'll go from there.

Caravanwise, we'll probably depart around 8 am on Friday which will get us into Irvine between 1 and 3 pm. Perfect timing to beat the late afternoon LA Rush Hour. More to come tomorrow!
