ATTN: rx8 owners with Navigation system

Okay, heres the deal

Bought an rx8 8 months ago. Paid $2000 for the navigational system, and now it's come to my attention that it's an outdated DVD (It doesnt have the 210 freeway on it).

Basically, I'm upset with Mazda because they do not want to provide their customers with an up to date navigation cd. (which we paid $2000 for). Which in my opinion is ridiculous.

My brother bought a G35 around the same time i bought the rx8 and infiniti provided him with an UP TO DATE DVD (when he bought the car). without ANY hassle.

so now.. i am asking all of you if the navigation DVD mazda provided you is up to date or not.

ps. as of now: if you want to update your navi DVD, it's the end user's responsibility.

oh yea
when i contacted my dealership, they told me to contact navtech direct (which i did) then navtech told me that they dont sell to end users. then i contacted Mazda, and they said contact navtech direct (which i did not do this time, telling them that navtech sends me to the dealership) then the dealership told me the DVD will cost me (the end user $400).

I have the Navigation and it's pretty much useless it sutters, it is off by 100ft, and it reroutes when I am near freeways. Mazda said talk to Navtech, Navtech said talk to Mazda, The Dealer said talk to Mazda or Navtech. So pretty much this is my last Mazda car I am buying ever if they can't even give us a damn disc at discount or support janky equipment.

F*CK you Mazda ..

I'm seriously one mechanical failure away from crashing my RX-8 and claiming the insurance on it and buying something that works right. I have way more issues on this supposive sports car than the Navi, which Mazda refuses to fix, and the dealership stands behinds Mazdas opinion that everything is working fine.

you guys should have bought an after market gps. i bought one for $1200. never needs updating because it tracks in real time. it still works on rainy or cloudy days. i saved $800. bucks and it can still tell me where the nearest carl's jr is. might be something for you guys to look at if you really need a street guide. oh by the way it's good for all of north america..

thats not an excuse for mazda to screw us over. we paid $2000 for a navi... when we could of bought on for $800.
goes to show you that mazda is ~ bad ~

we paid $2000 for a navi system, and the after market one would work better then the one we paid for.

ridiculous

I too have a nav system, and haven't had a whole lot of problems. The only place I have had it re-route on me is the Hopyard offramp of 580 in Pleasanton.

The only place I had it really badly fail to route was by Harbin Hotsprings in Lake County

The only major complaint that I have is where the switches are put, since I am short and can't adjust the system while driving without taking my eyes off the road (the joy stick is behind the plane of my shoulder blades.

My wife has a nav system for her 2002 Prius (also factory installed), and she hasn't gotten an update disk for it either. Of course, my DeLorme nav system came with a CD, and I haven't gotten another one from then either (unless I offer to pay).

As to the Infinity vs Mazda disks, when I asked the Toyota guy when I bought the car, updates come out from different manufacturers at different times. If they come out every year (lets face it, roads don't change that frequently), and manufacturer A comes out in January, and manufacturer B comes out in June, when you get the car and with which nav system definitely determines how new your disk is. My friend who got his G35 a little bit before I got my RX also hasn't gotten an updated disk (other than the one installed when he bought the car).

It's not just Mazda.

My Lincoln avaitor that cost twice a much as the 8 does not have an updated disk out yet.

The issue with with NavTech (sp?), not Mazda. All car manufactures that utilize NavTech have the same issues of getting updates.

The price of the dvd update is completely unreasonable. 400 bucks for an update? I don't think so. I sure as hell ain't paying that. IMO it shouldn't be more than 50 bucks and I was hoping it'd be more like 25. I mean we're getting an UPDATE fer god's sake.

Personally my DVD is a bit out dated. And it doesn't recognize some OLDER streets (like been around for 10 years or more). And it got the street type of some streets wrong (which makes inputting directions harder). Overall though it works well enough for me 80% of the time. I wouldn't blame Mazda at all though except for their choice in picking the navigation company. All those issues come from the navigation software company.

Please check your information before stating things as fact.

The updates are NOT $400. they are $40 from the dealer. I just got mine FedEx'd for my avaitor today, to my suprise, and it was free.

NavTech is really not the issue as well. They provide 80% of the world auto manufactures with DVD navigation with different formats and languages. Things take time. Remember, they need to update ALL the streets, gas stations, atm's etc, etc. If you think you can do better or faster, have at it.

I blame MTV and the internet for this entire thread.

WOW that is so cheap, I might as well spend an other $1600 and get an other Navigation unit installed in the trunk, just in case I need to look at directions while I am taking things out of there. MAZDA is on crack, that is way too much... although the dealer I bought the car from said the disc was $350 plus shipping, but there is no update yet.

Well, excuse me for leaving out the "if". I'll restate my position IF it'll make you happy.

IF the update dvd costs $400 like it was stated in this thread (now stated TWICE) but unverified by me, I will not buy it because IF that is the price, it is unreasonable.

And IF it is $400 for an update, then it is the fault of the people selling the disc, which would be NavTech or Mazda. Since I don't think Mazda is doing a 1000% mark up, I blame NavTech. We paid for the original DVD; we've already paid for most of the cost of developing the software. We just need the update which costs them less money too since they have most of the streets done and all they're doing is adding on streets.

I have no idea what MTV has to do with this. Unless not liking/watching MTV makes you think buying an update for $400 is reasonable? Or is it not liking MTV or the internet makes you not assume what people say in a thread is true? I mean, I admit, I didn't check to see how much an update disc would cost from Mazda - I just take what people say at face value. Like when someone says "Don't drive fast in the rain with DSC off - DSC really helps", I assume that's true so I don't bother checking up on it. :-/

I mean if I REALLY need an update, then I would check the price myself, but I don't really need it. Just stating that I think $400 is unreasonable for an update DVD.

I have to agree, just like an update to windopws 98 to Win Xp is not the full price only an upgrade price. Although if the DVD disc actually updated the firmware and audio I would not be against paying at the most $200 for the disc. As far as I know the Navi unit runs off the disc and nothing is kept on the actual unit itself.

Hmmm... I'm not sure... i think it's just the media that they update (the DVD disk itself)

It does.

It does not say aviator or lincoln. That is generated from the nav unit itself
