I with you on that one. It's the most annoying thing I have seen.

 

Considering it's a revenue generator for the site, I think they're here to stay.
I've gotten so use to them that they don't bother me much any more. I just ignore the pop-ups.

Just get firefox, and the javascript blocker plugin. Then you won't see them anymore, ecept in quotes, but they are just dead links.

 

They're driving me nuts, it's made me stop coming to the forum as often.

 

it makes my posts look like a christmas tree...hahaah watch, look at my sig!

 

I've seen that some people have changed their sig color to green to try and hide the links.

 

If they have to do something to generate funds, I'd rather it be this than pop up ads every time I load a page... It's not really that intrustive?

They weren't in "my" posts when I wrote them, and I don't like that they make it look like I support what the links are selling. Some of them are for things I wouldn't support. This forum is not what it was, and the sticker is coming off my car...

 

Well you can't really take them with you when you go . Besides as far as I'm concerned once I press "enter" they become property of the forum. They can do with them whatever they want, I don't really want them back. I have too much stuff now the way it is.

 

There's a difference between allowing the forum to use my words to serve the purposes of the forum, and allowing the forum to change my words to make it seem like I'm saying something I didn't say. It's offensive. I haven't gone back and read the user agreement, but I'd be surprised if adding links to the text is within the agreement. I should be able to use the words "torque wrench" without advertising one that I know nothing about.

 

C'mon if they were singling people out I could see it being maybe "offensive". Considering it effects us all, try not to take it so personally .

 

How about an annual membership fee of 10 or 20 bucks?
This would weed-out the spammers from posting too.

When you move your mouse over the link there is a link inside labeled "What's this" and it explains it so that people don't think you are condoning it.

 

User fee is a VERY bad idea, we would probably not get hardly any new members. People wouldn't be able to surf the site without paying the fee first. I wouldn't have paid to become a member before seeing what this site could offer first.

I suppose if someone was stupid enough to make a mandatory user fee, then yes, the site would go to hell. Luckily that's a stupid idea and nobody would impliment that. I belong to a site with user fees, and without paying you can still view and post . There are other things you cannot access or use.

 

95% of people out there have seen those links before. We all know that YOU are not advertising. I also don't see how it offends you? Honestly, the links dont bother me one bit. As for the forum being allowed to modfiy your word, they are. I've ran many boards before in the past, and forum owners are allowed to change stuff in a post as they are the owners of this forum. If an admin really wanted too, he could single you out and make a script that automatically converted when you said 'the' to have a link that goes to www.thesuperduperfunguy.com. Also, when you registered, the agreement stated:
The owners of RX8Club.com reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason.
This pretty much means you agree by using rx8club, that they can modify any of your posts for any reason.

 

Posts are not "threads." The posts are ascribed to the indiviual users. There should be a difference between what is inside the posts -- what the users write -- and what is around them -- the advertising. The board is portraying users as endorsing products we've got no affiliation with. That's why it's wrong.

As to the legality of the inserted links, true, I have not gone back to look, but I doubt that the board has limitless authority to change the individual posts, at least not under the agreement that existed when I joined. The owners of the board would never be within their rights to modify an innocent post solely to suggest that the author was a child molester, for example -- that would be libel, no matter what the agreement says. Nor do I think the board's owers could ever claim copyright ownership over a poem, picture or story posted without explicit disclosure of the loss of the copyright to the work's author before he posted it -- and I've seen none. I've posted lots such stories and photos and, unless shown otherwise, I believe I own the copyrights to those works, even though I think the board has likely taken the right to use them. (If the board sold a photo I took to Car and Driver, for example, it would be violating my copyright to the photo, even though I've probably signed away any right to complain when the photo gets put on the site's home page.)

Am I going to sue? Of course not. Am I going to keep posting? That's the harder question.

You're deluding yourself. You aren't "allowing the forum to use your words to serve the purposes of the forum". Instead, the forum is allowing you a space to post your words. A *FREE* space, I might point out. It's your choice whether to post here or not.

Nobody with a modicum of intelligence is going to think that the green advertising links that pop up are you supporting or otherwise endorsing the sponsor of the link. Again, you are deluding yourself.
