To initiate newbies to the fun that is Crossfire.

My apologies to everyone. I let myself carried away with the joking.
How do I delete this thread?

Chapter 1 - Introduction
Crossfire is a multiplayer graphical arcade and adventure game made for the X-Windows environment. It has certain flavours from other games, especially Gauntlet (TM) and Nethack/Moria. Any number of players can move around in their own window, finding and using items and battle monsters. They can choose to cooperate or compete in the same "world."

Chapter 2 - Installation Questions
2.1 What do I need to run Crossfire?
You will need UNIX, X-windows and an ANSI C compiler to compile this game.

Crossfire has been known to compile on the following systems (latest known version number of Crossfire that compiled on these systems is included in parentheses):

Sun3, SunOs 4.1.1, gcc (0.90.3)
DEC300AXP-500 (Alpha with OSF1 1.3) (0.90.3)
Sun4 with SunOS 4.1.3 (0.90.2)
Ultrix 4.2a (0.90.1)
PC Compatiable, with Linux (0.89.3)
IBM RS/6000 with AIX 1.2, X11R4/5 (0.91.4)
HP735, HPUX, X11R5 (0.90.2)
DEC 3100 and DEC 5000 with ULTRIX BSD 4.2
DEC with OSF1
VAX3100 with BSD 4.3
IBM RT with BSD4.3
HP9000-series (HP-UX) (very old versions of HP-UX might barf on stdarg.h)
MIPS with RISC/os
(UMIPS) 4.52 (?)
It has been compiled with X11R3, X11R4 and X11R5 (the editor requires X11R5).

To get directions on compilation, read the INSTALL file.

2.2 How do I get the files?

I love a good Internet fad just as much as the next guy, but I tend to think the Crossfire is a pretty unique car. I would never own one because it doesn't do anything particularly well especially considering the price. However, I definitely think it looks stylish and interesting. I know plenty of people who think the RX-8 looks like a chick car (hence the reason so many chicks like them) so it's odd hearing so much crap about the way a car looks from a forum for a car that doesn't exactly have the most traditional lines in the world.

I think a lot of people own RX-8's because of the way they look and then just say they love how "tossable" it is and how they just "get it" because they're an "enthusiast".

Know why you like what you like and own who you are. People who joke about the Crossfire as anything more than a runaway joke must have been picked on as a child. Otherwise, what's your goal? Oh well, enough ranting for one night.

Cool Admit it......

OK, I'll fess up - the reason I pick on the 'C' word car is it's performance - it's one of the few Sportscars that can be definitively whupped by an RX-8!

Not even much of a contest, it just makes us feel good - as the Germans say, "schadenfreude" - joy at the expense of others.....

Nothing wrong with poking fun as long as there is some substance to back it up.

It looks like a dog squatting from behind.

Well said. The 8 isn't for everybody either...but you must admit it's more appealing to the masses.

If anything, the crossfire is an interesting design, and does evoke shapes from the automotive streamliner design era. What can a Evo/Sti/Si/GTi owner say about their car "it evokes...economy." Who wants an industry full of clones anyways, atleast the designer put some thought into it, and from some angles it actually works.

My father in law works for Daimler and brought one home, it's not really sporty but it's not a POS to drive. It's still a RWD Merc. underneath, and I'd take that over an SRT4.

Crossfire was this really old board game where you played against someone else and both you kept shooting marbles at these two pieces at the exact same time until they fell into your opponent's end. Those were the days

I have to say that I don't honestly mind the crossfire that much.

A bit expensive for what It will do, but if they engineered a different front end, it wouldn't look half bad.

At least it's unique.

I am sorry, but I would laugh my *** off at seeing that go around a drift course.

With a new SRT Chrysler Crossfire done up in Formula D trim making an appearance at SEMA, Mopar's new focus on becoming a contender to Japan's best on the drifting track looks to be getting sharper. Good for Mopar, we say. Recognizing that drifting has a future as an ESPN2-style subclass of auto racing is one thing, getting serious about challanging the Nissan Skylines and Mazda RX-7s of the world (ok, RX-8s too) is another, more difficult, challenge. Here's to Mopar aiming to get another one right.

An Evo/STi owner can say their car evokes fear because it'll pwn most cars on the road. That's what it's built for. A Crossfire is built to have a unique look and an upscale feel. I think that many cars that get discussed on this board (350Z, G35, Evo, STi, S2K, Crossfire) have their places and I would never say one car is better than the other for every person.

And as sexy as the 8 is I think most people think the Crossfire is a more luxurious looking car. My guess is that it would sell better if it weren't a Chrysler.

I wouldn't have bought the 8 if it was a Chrysler. Reason being I had two previous Chrysler products that didn't hold up well.

I checked out the x-fire forum once. It was kind of funny. They kind of sounded like us. Bitching about lack of power and lack of aftermarket. They also think they have the greatest car ever made. Poor dilusional idiots.
