I had to pull over into a parking lot to take a cell phone call yesterday.

My blue tooth earpiece was dead.

So, as I'm sitting in the shopping center parking lot talking, about 15 minutes into my conversation with a business compatriot, my car gets blasted by a shopping cart that the wind got hold off.

It left a nice ding in my rear fender.

SON OF A BITCH!!!

 

Luckily, I do my grocery shopping after midnight. The parking lot is virtually empty except for employees. If I find any stray carts that may make their way over to Bella I gather them up and put them in the cart return thingy. I must say, grocery shopping is much quicker at that hour. No lines or anything.

 

I know that there are signs everywhere in most parking lots that state "any damage that occurs to your car is not the responsibility of the parking lot" but I'm pretty sure that the owner of the establishment is held liable regardless. I would approach someone and see if they will take care of the damage.

 

If I did that here they'd never stop laughing.

 

I very recently saved somebody's parked car from getting hit by a fully loaded cart. The woman who bought all that stuff left the cart and started adjusting something in her car's trunk. The lot has a slope so the cart started rolling. I chased it and stopped it. I was doing all this running and this woman was still doing her thing. Its amazing how many people are so reckless in parking lots. Don't understand why people don't return the carts that they just used. Guess they don't care about other people's property. Makes me sick!

 

Good for you!!!! I wish more people did stuff like that.

 

I did that once... And then they accused me of stealing their groceries!

 

Ouch.. well it definatly could of been worse. Like I dunno a bunch of immature teenage punks pushing pushing the cart at your 8. Also where was that um "special employee" who is supposed to be going around collecting those carts?? You could ask the stoe owner of the cart to possibly help with paying for repairs but if anything stress to them that it shouldnt of happened if they had people collecting the carts on a regular basis. I work in a plaza and they have someone from the Supermarket out every 30min's going out to collect the carts.

 

Thats a shame. I do what BG said. I grab at least one cart and return it to the corral. I have also driven right on out of the parking lot if there are many strays around.

 

American shoppers could block the entire mexican border with maybe 14 stray shopping carts.

 

I always park next to one of those island things in the parking lot and as far away as possible to avoid shopping cart damage. Always check the grade of the parking lot and park on the uphill section. The wife always tells me to move them if they are within a 1/4 mile radius of the car. lol

^ Same. I park basically in the next area code in a parking lot with stray carts. One thing that's helped with this, however, is the concept of paying a quarter to unlock a cart - you get the quarter back when you bring the cart back (and lock it up, to release the coin). A bit of a pain if you're parked a zillion miles away, but it's worth it.

 

Well I work at Lowe's, and I park my car like basically as far as humanly possible away from the building. The establishment is really not responsible if your car gets hit by a cart, unless it is an employee pushing it or loading something, you are screwed. And the people that are supposed to be pushing in carts are very expendable, so this time of the year, when most places aren't doing a whole lot of business, such as a place like Lowe's or Home Depot, the cart pushers tend to get their hours cut, or put in other areas of the store. It's good information to know when you are scouting for a decent parking spot.

 

Agreed. Why the hell are people completely incapable of returning the friggin carriage? It's 10 FEET AWAY AT MOST! No, instead they'll spend 15 goddamn minutes trying to prop it up on a curb.

Perhaps we need to start paying for carriages and you get your money back when it's returned.

Anyway, sorry to hear about that. The person who left that carriage out should be beaten with it and their children made to watch.

 

The no liability sign is out there to scare you away, if you took them to small claims court they'd just pay you to get rid of you IMHO. It is there responsiblity to maintain their property inside and out.

If you slip on someone's spilled drink on their floor inside, they are still liable since they should have had an employee clean it up. If a cart is loose outside, it is their responsibility to have someone put it away safely.

I'm not an attorney, but this is how I see it.

 

The shopping cart is the property of the store so their property harmed your property. LOL
