ProStreet

As you know, I've had a very bad experience getting my GReddy kit installed & tuned. Part of the problem has turned out to be defective parts from GReddy (nobody's quality control is perfect, I guess).

What I can tell you is that ProStreet has really stepped up to the plate to make sure everything gets sorted out so my 8 is tight.

Can you list out which parts were defective, how they were identified, what parts of the install process were done incorrectly and how ProStreet resolved the situation?

We're still in-motion on all this stuff. I will give details once everything is sorted out.

I talked to Sapphonica on the phone about ProStreet because I was referenced to them to get a future turbo kit installed on my car. I felt bad for what was happening with Sapphonica, it seemed as though nothing was going right for him. The next day I called John Huh from ProSport and asked how much on labor and about Sapphonica's car and he said that he's done 3 RX-8's. Sapphonica's car has been in the and out of the shop for over a month and he said the problem is a defective and broken wastegate.

I would love to find a place to install my turbo, and I went to the meet that Prostreet held and they do not seem like a bad company at all. I was impressed by the meet they threw and the cars they had in their shop. Hopefully everything starts to come together for you Sapphonica as I know this has been a nightmare for you.

Please let us all know how things are going.

My fit was missing the piping that goes into the engine. I was a bit pissed. Greddy was not helpful in that respect. Telling me to go to my authorized dealer & have them request the part. What a PITA. Quality of the parts is good, but assembly of the kit (all parts in the box) is very average. In talking with the 350Z guys they have experieced similar things (missing parts, double parts, etc) on their 350Z Twin turbo kits.

That's all well and good but they never answered my questions regarding this install. You'd think they would do a test drive to make sure everything works properly. Apparently they did not. That seems like a fundamental lapse in judgement. Then there were bits not installed correctly or not installed at all. Again that sounds like a serious problem.

Agreed. I'd be interested in how those other installs went as well.

After 2+ months of misadventures, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

It took me about 3 hours to reinstall the wastegate actuator, plug the eManage/E01 back together, & sort out some very funky vacuum routing.

The result? 7 psi all the way to redline with no nasty spikes.

Problem solved.

Unfortunately, the cover for my ECU has the tabs broken off, the original bolts for it are missing, and there are bolts missing from the plastic shroud under the engine.

Now, I can get back to the task of trying for 300+ WHP

So far, here is what I've found:

The ECU cover is trashed. The tabs are all broken off, there's only 1 bolt holding it on, and that isn't even the original one (it is a gold-colored one).

There's a bunch of other fasteners/hold downs in the engine compartment that are cut/broken/missing, so a lot of stuff is loose.

The vacuum hose routing was total chaos, so I re-did everything.

There are 2 missing bolts that are supposed to fasten the plastic shroud under the engine, so it is currently flapping in the breeze.

The brown RPM offset wire on the E01 was never spliced into the eManage harness. I see no way the ProStreet installer's claim that 'it's holding 7psi up to redline' could possibly be true, since you need the boost controller to see/compensate for RPM in order to do that.

ProStreet suspected the boost control solenoid, wastegate actuator, and eManage were bad...all were inspected by GReddy: no problems with any of them.

I had to make an extra trip back to ProStreet (from Oakland) to get the engine cover that they neglected to put back on my car when it was 'ready to be picked up' with the wastegate actuator removed.

Initially I had a bad boost gauge, which I immediately noticed, but was told it wasn't defective for 6 weeks until it was finally replaced.

The EGT gauge still partially blocks my speedometer. When it was initially installed, I couldn't see the speedometer at all.

The AmateurStreet, er, ProStreet install started on July 7th, and I finally threw in the towel & picked up the car with the turbo disabled during the week of September 12th. Most of that time, the car was at ProStreet.

The reason the turbo was disabled was due to the inability of the installer to diagnose & fix an overboost condition at part throttle. It took me 3 hours to reinstall the wastegate actuator, sort out the f*-up vacuum hoses, connect the eManage, E01, boost controller, and go for a drive with it holding 7 psi of boost at low RPMs. No overboost condition observed. After splicing in the brown RPM sensor wire & tweaking the E01 RPM offset, I hold 7 psi up to redline.

It has been & is still throwing a CEL.

It is running like crap (bogging) below 3000 RPM. I live at the bottom of a hill, and have a hard time getting the car up the hill without thrashing the turbo &/or stalling. I am working with GReddy to diagnose/fix this.

The interior of the car smelled like grease & had greasy spots when I picked it up. Maybe that couldn't be avoided, but I suspect greasy hands/clothes were all over the interior.

I am in conversation with my attorney on whether or not its worth it to take these jokers to small claims court.

My goodness, that place sounds like a nightmare. From the looks of the place, they seem like they would have it together, but I guess not. As far as small claims court, unless you are sueing someone for a significant amount of money, its not worth it. Lawyer fees alone would cost you a couple thousand, and if you lose that would be totally out of your pocket. I can't imagine the anger you must have right now, but you more than likely just have to write this one off, and be glad your engine is still working.

Small claims typically don't allow lawyers to represent you in court. You have to go and present yourself so except for pre-court legal fees you elect to pay it doesn't cost much.
