New Hood Design

Has anyone heard whether an aftermarket company will be making a hood like the Mazdaspeed 8 in Speed Magazine? I for one would be very interested.

ps. Thanks to downshift for the images

According to the magazine, this is a one-off "Mazdaspeed" version done by some Mazda techs that wanted to push the '8 a little further. It may or may not ever be released.

Bunny Grill

I've been hoping someone would produce a Bugs Bunny grill with a couple of large teeth. Of course, I'd then need some custom mirrors shaped like bunny ears.

Does the forward facing scoop on this 8 serve any real purpose or is it just for looks?

most likely for the "****" factor.... unless you want to "cut" the aluminium bonnet to make it functional

I was reading this article today in fact... This Mazdaspeed 8 is supercharged, the scoop is where it draws in the forced air for the supercharger... it's producing 275hp .. unfortunately they didn't show any pictures of the engine...

That's the best aftermarket hood I've seen so far.

Eh... for whatever reason they mounted the inter-cooler on top of the engine, where the scoop blows on it... Dunno if that is BEST practice, but it is all according to the article...

The scoop's for a top-mounted intercooler? WTF?

Where's the front mount?

not uncommon to see a engine mount intercooler. Kinda like how the wrx/sti's are. Not sure whats the upside to using one over a front mount.

Yeah but unlike the Sti's, the hood scoop is kinda small.
The only advantage I see is the lower cost of manufacture since the pipework is a lot shorter.
Totally crap though from a serious performance stand point IMO.

I'm not sure if it's always neccessarily better going with a fmi over a engine mount or vmount intercooler. Sure it looks cooler, but how would it affect performance?

Increased surface area exposed to direct air flow......... resulting in cooler intake temperatures.

Additionally, less chance of heat soak from the engine fouling the charged air flowing through the intercooler.

Even the WRC Subarus do away with the top mount in favour of the front mount.

Please keep us posted. Any idea how long it might be? I need to replace my hood and I don't like any of the current aftermarket hoods that are available.
