i don't think it's geared to compete directly w/ WRX and Evo. it's more along the lines of the old mitsu galant VR4 and the subaru legacy B4 RSK, more mature. it'll handle real well, and it'll be a blast to drive, but it'll be quality and sophisticated, not brash and cheap-feeling like the Evo

Isn't this car going to be faster than the RX8, cheaper than the RX8 (maybe) and have better gas mileage than the RX8?

If so, then what is Mazda doing to the RX8 platform? This was the last thing I was hoping for ... the MS6speed to be released prior to any promises of a Mazda FI for the RX8 .. I guess more 6's on the road I guess.

I'd like to see more pictures... This one doesn't reveal too much of the car but it looks like it has lost some of its curves. I don't like what I see on the picture, but I really like to 6 (one of my favorite sedan); I guess it can't be too bad with a turbocharged 4-banger, AWD, and big brake kit.

The MS6 is not what Mazda needs right now. They need to dump more money into rotary engine development. However, it is a nice car. I can't see myself owning one. Besides, this isn't officially out. It's just what we might see, according to the Paris Auto Show. I'm curious as what will happen to the RX-8 if this car is supposed to be stronger. Bad move Matsuda.

***EDIT***

I could care less whether this car is out or not. I already have an RX-8, and I'm pretty content with it.

Well--its a cool car--but they also say "a version is to be sold in the U.S." it could be the reported 276HP that was originally leaked-for this market. In actuality, I think this is more of a stronger indicator that a FI RX8 is in the pipeline (cross fingers); because Mazda will want to keep the RX8 as its flagship. I suppose the Mazdaspeed RX8 is next on the list.

Those pictures looks better but IMO the hood looks too big and the wheel aren't looking good at all (I'm a huge fan of the mazda stock rims!).

I'm guessing it's going to be a little more refined than the likes of a WRX/STi/Evo and a little less so than say a Volvo S40 or Legacy GT, maybe good competition for an R32, but I hope they come in way under the R32 in pricing. It'll be interesting to see what kind of power it ends up with. Has Mazda finally learned it's lesson and realized there's a horsepower war goin on? Whatever the HP rating is I bet it will be a little underrated, Mazda wouldn't make the same mistake yet again... would they...

oh look my wifes new car!!! this is exactly what mazda needs. this will just furthur enhance the over all brand image and bring in more dollars. it will not hurt their plans for 8 developement or 7(whatever they choose to call it) developement it will only help. another "got to have it" car from Mazda! the awd system is spiffy diverts alot of power to the rear for hot launches-

3) All-New Active Torque Split All-Wheel Drive System
The Mazda6 MPS is equipped with Mazda's new active torque split, all-wheel drive system. Based on the road-proven system of the Mazda6 available in some global markets, but featuring more aggressive transfer of torque to the rear axle on all road surfaces in accordance with driving conditions, the new all-wheel-drive system achieves a fine balance between sporty control over the car that makes it particularly fun to drive and handling stability on snowy or wet surfaces or under other challenging road conditions. Power and torque are faithfully and thoroughly transferred to the road surface for maximum efficiency and performance.

The system uses real-time input data on steering angle, yaw rate, lateral G force and engine status to determine road surface and driving conditions. The active torque coupling mounted in front of the rear differential is electronically controlled accordingly, adjusting front/rear wheel torque distribution between 100:0 and 50:50 to deliver optimum drive power to each wheel. The result is powerful acceleration and positive handling regardless of constantly changing road conditions, as well as the ability to fully balance the car in a turn by deft use of the accelerator pedal.

The Mazda6 MPS's onboard computer automatically determines driving and road conditions so the driver can relax and enjoy the pleasure of the drive. Three different modes of front/rear torque distribution are selected by the system: Normal, Sports, and Snow, (for slippery surfaces). The Power Take Off (PTO) system that that aggressively distributes torque to the rear axle is fitted with its own water-cooled cooling system.

A new rear differential with greater torque capacity is employed by the system to deliver a high level of reliability. Increased torsional rigidity of the propeller shaft and rear differential mount improves the response of torque transfer to the rear wheels and delivers a more rigid feel to the ride under acceleration. And a limited slip differential is used in the rear differential optimizes transfer of torque to the left and right rear wheels, realizing solid traction and linear vehicle control that delivers a stable feeling ride when cornering.

then you should check out mazda6tech.com. they are as rabid about their cars as we are about ours. their car came out first so is first in line for upgrades. besides they make alot more money off the 6 then they do the 8. its their bread and butter over there at Mazda.

There is going to be a lot of crying on this board if the 6 ends up being considerably faster than the RX-8. It'll be interesting... since most of you don't care about HP and numbers

zoom44, Mazda's new AWD system sounds almost like Nissan's ATTESA-ETS. Really cool. It would suck to know a Mazda 6 was faster than me, but that's okay. That won't stop me from shoehorning a GT35R, 1.06 A/R turbo in my RX-8. :D

you are probably right. but hopefully not too much- and not from me.
i'm excited as hell seing this car come to market. and if any 8 owners are worried it will be faster think about this-

is your car any slower today then it was when you bought it?
is your car any less fun to drive today then the day you bought it?
there are already many many cars out there that are "faster" than the 8 you bought? why would one more bother you?

and dont go crying about its better mileage either
