No wonder she woudnt rev up.
Looks like the first section collapsed. The stock cat has 2 substrates. If the aft substrate is ok, you can keep it although I think you will still get P0420 as the sensor is sandwiched b/t these two substrates. But at least you minimize on the smell.
P0420 fails emissions here. Plus, the back substrate is caked in carbon. The cat is cooked because the previous owner liked seeing fire shoot out the tailpipe. He deleted the Secondary Air Injection pump. As a side effect, he removed the Metering Oil Pump driver. (S2 RX-8s have a fully electronic OMP system. It sits on top of the engine underneath the intake manifold and gone is the pump that used to be down on the lower right side of the engine in front of the exhaust.) Without that driver connected, the OMP system defaults to maximum oil into the oil injectors and I think that had something to do with the catalyst getting clogged.
That, and he dumped half a case of Idemitsu premix in on fillup. Damn car smoked like mad just idling and pulling it up onto the trailer.
I've got a Magnaflow on order... Along with a Racing Beat header and catback.
I'm getting rid of this single tip thing that's on it now.
