Hello guys I’ve recently bought my RX8 kuro and was wondering if I should get a decat midpipe as the next step will be to get a sohn adapter and few other bits. I know there’s a few post about it but they’re a bit old now.

I know there will be a smell but don’t quite get what type, if it’s a sort of petrol smell then I’m fine with that, more concerned about the noise as I don’t want it tooooo loud, as I have a BMW with a straight pipe and its just too much ( I feel sorry for my neighbours) if I should go for it what decat midpipe would you guys recommend?

 

Start the car cold and take a whiff of the exhaust right away. It's that smell but all the time. It will be noisier, but not crazy if your decat includes resonators.

But there's also not a ton to gain from doing this.

 

brh resonated mid pipe and i vote yes decat it. a clogged cat will kill your engine esp if you dont keep up on the ignition parts (coils, plugs, wires) cats are only good for chineese food, coyote bait or hatian bbq

 

Get it right... A clapped out engine will clog a cat. A clogged cat will finish off an already dead engine. The cat killed my engine story has always been a red herring to deflect from people who don't know how to handle a rotary engine. Don't decat, just maintain your ****. The only exception is a track only car.

yea that’s what I heard about it killing the engine. And yes getting coils, plugs, hoses and wires are all on the list.
Most important for me right now is to do everything to help with reliability so sohn adapter and decat to me seams like a good idea as the engine had a rebuild around ~9k miles ago but the guy I got it of said he didn’t really premix😱 which to me isn’t really smart lol so I wouldnt be surprised if the cat is starting to get clogged.

btw the car isn’t a daily have it for the weekends and hoping to go on track a few times

 

most 8s havent been premixed by the masses its a rotard thing. why do you think the cat is getting clogged? are you getting misfires? not premixing or not using a sohn will not clog a cat

 

Poor maintenance and/or state of tune causes ignition. Cats don't cause any problems at all unless you're doing very specific things that OP definitely isn't doing based on that post.

Seconded on not premixing not affecting cats. Only way anything premix related could negatively affect a cat would be if you premixed with something weird or premixed to an absurd degree. Both have the opposite of the presumed relationship.

Get it cleaned up and as close as you can to how it left the factory. By then, you'll have a better understanding of how things work and can start making modifications. A well sorted car is a lot like Jazz; you have to learn all the rules before you can start breaking them in a positive way. Otherwise it's just noise. Just because someone said to do something loudly on the internet doesn't make it a good idea.

 

well nothing that I can see atm but then again I’ve never driven rotary’s before so wouldn’t be able to really tell. Rather have it done now and not worry about it getting clogged up later down the line, just is it really worth it? Will the engine benefit from not having any resistance by removing Dpf? And I know sohn wouldn’t do much to the Dpf but it will minimise the unburnt oil in the engine therefore giving me a longer engine life span as then I can run fully synthetic to the sump and only have 2stoke inside the actual engine (so what I’ve heard) correct me if I’m wrong.

 

Worth is subjective. To me it's not worth the smell and hassle. I would check what state it's in now, to make sure it's not already gone. All thr other stuff: synthetic, premix, Sohn, are good ideas and you can do them with a healthy cat. I have for 12 years.
