Midpipe Smell Issues.. Dangerous?

Well i had the midpipe put in a few months back, and the smell is obviously horrible. Especially when the windows are down.

Well now, with parents complaining when i pull into the garage it smells even when we wake up in the morning, and they are afraid of it seeping into the house...

Anyway, are the "fumes" exactly more dangerous on an exhaust without a midpipe? I assume they are i just would like to know the logic, thanks.
P.S, B&B single res. midpipe for sale, lol.

It's just unburnt fuel. Enjoy it.

But yes I stink up the house and my clothes all the time. 'Nuff of it will make yer eyes burn. Can't be good but I am sure ther is worse. Gotta die some how.

Absolutely more dangerous. All kinds of toxic stuff. Emission rules are not just some kind of a prank.

I suggest you park your car outside until you get a cat back on it.

i was doing some carb adjusting on my 7, which has no cats, with both garage doors open, and even still after 10 or so minutes my eyes were burning and i had a headache.

im about to gut the cat on my 8 as well. since ive got a code for cat efficiency.

im for sure doing my duty to help the environment

Ken, I will respectfully disagree, to a point. Show me the long-term tox studies describing serious health implications of NOX and VOC at the exposure levels experienced by an end user in a ventilated area. You can't because they don't exist. They either haven't been done because there is no likely acute or low cornice risk or they have been done and have shown no risk. Tox will likely only be apparent at high concentrations or long exposures.

Having said that, I still go to great lengths to minimize exposure to my family.

The smell will be worse, but if it is horrible double check and make sure you don't have an exhaust leak at some point in the line, did you reuse the old gaskets or replace them with new ones?

No way! That is awesome. Had no idea when i posted. I truely hope it has brought joy...and joyness, to all. As for the real original owner, I would have to search back a few years to see as I bought it used as well.

Nice sig.

I have had a few midpipes, it's not that bad. My garage does not stink in the morning. But then again I don't idle in the garage either. I pull in and shut her down, no biggie. As a common courtesy I do shut if off in bank drive thrus though if I am going to be sitting for a while.

start it then reverse it out right away. close the garage if you want to let it idle.

there is no smell if you're using the midpipe properly.

The people behind you might disagree though.

mine was real bad for the first month now its not as bad before you get rid of it take it out for a good run hi rev. maybe your overfilling your oil and its dumping too much into your engine. get a oil catch tank might help a bit

Try reading the data sheet and conclude it's harmless:

http://cameochemicals.noaa.gov/chemical/4072

That's for NO2 which is the main part of NOx that EPA is concerned about in the general terms of public health. While the long term effects of low exposure are indeed unclear in specific, numerous studies exist showing showing increased respiritory distress as well as increased incidence of heart attacks on "smog days" or amoung poplations living near major highways and airports.

The other variations of NOx which aren't generally talked about are those that are highly reactive and "disappear" quickly, like nitric acid which reacts with pretty much everything, including lung tissue. The phrase "burning sensation" used to describe what one feels breathing fresh un-catted rotary exhaust is a pretty good descriptoin of what it's doing inside your lungs.

Unburned fuel is definitely not what it is. Back in the 1960's that smell was plentiful with all those carb's running around. But the combination of rich mixtures and low compression ratios kept temps in the engine generally too low to form NOx compared to what one can do easily today with leaner a/f and 10:1 compression.

Running with a Davesport cat isn't gonna have much affect on any reasonable street car, but is gonna knock down the crap coming out the back by 90% or more. Running catless is like taking a dump in a public swimming pool. "Just" one, and it may not be "unsafe", but do you really want your family to be swimming in it?

You know what, now that you say that, the smell has been reduced significantly since I started premixing 1oz per gallon. I thought maybe I had just become used to it over the last two years. Hmmm.
