I have an 06 AT at around 98000 miles. I need to replace the rear shocks and was wondering if it would be best to replace both the front and back or just the rear. Also if you have any suggestions for what shocks to get. I don’t have a very large budget, my parents want something comfortable but I want something a bit more sporty. Any input would help.

You only need to replace the rears if the fronts are still good. The main thing is to always replace them in pairs. I use KYB Gas-o-Just shocks on my AT RX8. They are very good shocks as they ride well at cruising speed but will become stiffer when you drive more aggressively.

Unless the stock springs are damaged you can just reuse them. That's what I did. The part number is 551115 for KYB Struts. They are there on Amazon but only 2 left apparently.

 

you’re like a bottomless well of bad advice. The front shocks also have 98,000 miles on them. There’s no way they’re still effective. Just because they’re not leaking etc. doesn't mean they’re any good. They were probably done over 50k miles ago. Just putting a pair on the rear is not a good strategy at all for effective handling and tire wear in general.

 

How do you know that they have 98k miles on them? Maybe they were already replaced much sooner than that. It depends if they are performing well and pass a visual inspection. It depends on the condition of the front's. If they are indeed old and dont look good even only on one side then yes, replace them as well. If they pass visual inspection and handle well they are just fine to leave on the car until they are no longer good. It's an AT used for daily driving not a race car. Any tire wear/handling issues can be sorted with a wheel alignment. I've had no issues on any car I've ever owned just replacing in pairs. The rear shocks on this car I find fail more often than the fronts. That may just be personal experience from running 4 RX8's but in 2 of the cars they were blown and fronts were still good. Now I did end up on those 2 cars replacing all 4 but one was because I wanted the coilover kit and the other I did because the fronts weren't looking good. But sometimes, people just change in pairs and the fronts on the OP car may be newer. The best way to know is from someone experienced, like your mechanic to tell you if the car needs all 4 changed out or not if you dont think you can tell.
