IronTanuki's 13B-REW

Instead of make a build thread up front then wait for the result I decided to make the thread after I have the car back, so less of a build thread and more of a reveal.

My setup used to be a MM GT3071R run with an AccessPort (build thread here). I ran this setup from approx 50k tp 60k miles and was overall unsatisfied with it. The mid range was good but at around 6500RPM it would fall on its face and feel like it hit a wall. I was on the fence about keeping it around once the original engine took a **** but a cracked downpipe forced my hand early. Trying to find replacement parts for the GReddy kit was the nail in the coffin for the MSP. It was time to cast off the side port oppression and get the peripheral ports I always wanted.

All the parts from my previous build were retained unless otherwise stated like the BHR ignition, Griffon radiator, IC (custom piping), exhaust, cat, etc.

High level is:
  • JDM 13B-REW
  • Street port
  • MSP front cover
  • BORG WARNER S300SX
  • Turblown Manifold

My goal was more than 400rwhp which Speed1 hit. The initial build was around 430rwhp but there was an issue on the dyno and it puked oil all over the place requiring another rebuild (at no cost to me).

Stock 6 speed is still being used so I didn't want to tempt fate by pushing for more power than that after talking with them. I may go to the FD transmission in the future and seek more power but right now it's feeling great

Still using the AEM Tru Boost with off being around 10psi iirc, setting A @ 12psi, and setting B @ 14-15ish psi.

Dyno done with Mil.Spec Evo cat. The AEM pump and BHR throttle adapter are there but not being used.

All labor and tuning was done by Speed1 in PA. I attached the full parts list for those interested in what the swap entailed in exact detail but I omitted the costs

*Edit: Forgot to mention one of the core requirements from me was that everything still worked, AC, powersteering, dash, OBD2, cruise control, and OMP. Speed 1 was able to meet those requirements.

Nicely done! Hope to do a similar build some day. Now just start injecting meth and turn up the boost!

btw I'd highly recommend a turbo blanket though. You're might be cooking everything in your engine bay with your turbo positioned up there.

I was already looking at the PTP blankets as soon as I got it home. I need to take the cover off the car and measure the turbine housing to see if I need a T3/T4 or a large T4 (I suspect the latter).

The reason the AEM methanol system isn't hooked up is Dave was telling me that even the smallest nozzle flows far too much for a two rotor and will squelch the combustion and make me lose power. He said the systems that do work run in the thousands. Considering I'd mostly use it for charge cooling and never rely on it's anti-knock as a matter of principle I think I'm going to keep running gas only. I would consider E85 if it was widely available in my area.

Out of respect for Speed1 I didn't want to disclose the component and total costs. I will say the total cost was well north of 10k so if you intend to do this swap on the cheap you pretty much need to do it yourself.

Nice.

Although after all that work, they couldn't clean the engine bay a little?

Also, is it really disrespectful to display the actual price? (Serious question)

Interesting, there are plenty of people running these injection systems successfully on rx7club and making more power. There's even a pumpless system that uses boost pressure to inject pre-turbo that is quite popular (link for the curious). But of course go with what your tuner recommends. 400 hp is plenty for a street anyway

I don't know if it is or not but personally I've never seen someone drop price sheets in threads like these unless they were disgruntled. I don't want to put the shop in a situation where some future customer expects a given price based on my project either.

I'm of the mind of using what Dave recommended especially since the work is under warranty. I am considering getting a small methanol tank and hooking it back up to use on occassion to clean out the engine since I have the pump and intake setup for it regardless.

Not sure why he is worried about that. I run 70/30 and it lights off just fine...that's using the biggest nozzle that comes in the kit

^- Agreed. I've been running roughly 65/35 with a 4GPH nozzle (Devil's Own kit) with no problems. Granted, I've only experimented up to 8psi so far....
