Broke welded nut in the frame
Broke welded nut in the frame
I snapped the welded nut inside of the frame rail with bolt holding on to the brace just behind the subframe.. can't drill through floor because there is thick sheet metal between the bolt and the floor pan that I cannot drill through because of the angle. The drill bit wont bite. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
Did the nut detach completely? If so you can fish it out with wire and fish in a new locking nut. I had to do something similar with my Jeep. Just have the wire welded to the nut, fish it in, get it tight and then cut off the wire that is welded to the nut.
Sorry maybe I wasn't clear. The factory nut came loose inside of the frame rail. It was probably welded to the frame rail originally. The bolt is now secured to the nut. I cannot get the bolt out because when I rotate i the nut rotates with it within the frame...
Yep...you are pretty much stuck doing that. You might be able to fish the nut and bolt part out of a frame rail hole...or you might have it sitting up in the frame rail rattling around. I suppose you could cut a window in the rail and then weld it back up if you have to get it out
If you can get at it...you might be able to re-weld the corner of the nut...but that isn't an easy thing to do with the brace in the way. And likely it is seized to the bolt
9k answered that already.
Pull the bolt down, cut it in half. The lower section (being out of the frame) will fall to the ground, then fish the rest out of the frame and replace.

I read that and I wasn't quite clear on what you guys mean by pulling the bolt down. The bolt is completely secured by the nut. How am I going to pull it down? Sorry. It sounds like all of you are on the same page, and I am little lost in translation.
Okay,
So from what im gathering here. You tightened the bolt into the nut. The nut broke free. So if you have no slack in the bolt (you can't move it up or down) to access the threads to cut, your going to have to grind the head of the bolt off.
After you do that you will be able to use a metal coat hanger or something of such nature to move the remaining metal bits around to an area where you can pull them out.
Make sense?

worked on it today and now I know what you mean by pulling the bolt down. I did that with a pry bar between the brace and frame with impact wrench rotating bolt. With the added downward friction, the bolt came out about 1/8"--big enough gap for a hack saw. Thanks all!
