I have loved this car for sometime now, my cuz got one of the first in my city and I loved it, I'm lil bit older now and a friend had bought a touring 2006 I think. He has replaced Cats and O2's but he still thought it was lacking power. I'm thinking coil's plugs and wires! after reading on the forums. But the car now has been sitting for sometime without running. Bat. has died and a rock spider-ed the back window.

My s10 head blew and my folks let me have there 99 Grand Am, I told my buddy that I was looking to sell it for something else, he told me 2800 and I pay him the rest. Well he only wants 3200 for the RX8. What should I do guys. I think I really want it and Since! since he doesn't know much about these cars I really want to buy my after high school sweetheart I had alot of fun in this car - stick my buddy's is auto flippy-do-da's........

So guys I have till the weekend to think about it $400 bucks for a RX8 Please give feed back, I'm older now and playing with the RX8 like I did was fun and all but I still look at these and love the way they look! Thank You for your Time & Feeds JON

 

You should find out why it died. And have a compression test done. Especially for it being automatic. Your $400 car can easily turn into several thousand before you ever get to drive it.

Pass it up AT=less power and fun. If it's sat still with no starting for a long time this is a problem as all the rotary seals are now dry befor the comp test you need to get the seals wet with lubed agin as doing a comp test with dry seals could kill the engine.and just hand turning the engine with a rotary don't work like it dose with a piston engine. Premix the hell out of it get it to start and don't rev it.

 

Well the Bat. died thats all I think they left a door open, as for a long time sitting, only a mouth or two. They can really get that dry? I was going to get a Bat. and just try to start it, so this would be a bad thing? And for Premix and hand turn I'm a hands on guy I know how to work on most anything with an engine, but not sure what your saying.

No, if it just sat a month or two, don't worry about the seals, they are fine. The only problem exists if you sit in a humid climate for 9+ months without starting the engine, and even that is overly concerned.

Just get a battery and fire it up.


You generally get what you paid for and you probably WILL have more problems than just a dead battery, but at $400 I wouldn't pass on it. Even if you lose 100% of your money, it's not all that much. There isn't an financial reason to continue deeper than you want to, and you just might get a really valuable car out of it.

 

^$400 is a little misleading... I think it's $400 + a running '99 Grand am for a non running RX8

 

Are you saying that the Grand Am has value? I don't.

He is paying only $400 to get rid of a Grand Am, and that by itself is a good deal in my opinion. :p

that was my thought, but it's still not much of an actual trade. if the 8 only has minor issues then fix it and sell it for something else and keep trading up.

there might not even be anything wrong with it, an auto 8 is hardly a quick car.. if the 8 doesn't run anymore i would suggest just passing on it or keep the reliable transportation.

 

yeah basically, I like the 25 mpg, but its granddaddy car. But yeah $400 + the grand am. But tonite he said that he is wanting a lil more money found out more too.

RX8 has 130k very clean Mazda cert. K&N intake and I think some others things like a jack in the center console for Iphones nothing really crazy.
He bough it from NJ and had it shipped to FL for $8k (Total)

He has done the plugs & wires. Cats & O2's and he parked it and bought a 350z for his daughter. Then the Back window spider-ed from a rock. found a back window for a $100 tho.

and with the mileage, if the engine is original, i hope you have a wrench set and plenty of time along with some additional money.

IMO it sounds like you need your current car more. you're paying for a fixer upper and giving up your reliable transportation for another "grand daddy" version of an RX8.

 

Total oh and the car runs fine he just thinks it lack power but I know these cars feel diff from others, like a V8 I dont think they ever rev it up past 35oo rpms

 

there is still the mileage issue, if it's an original 4 port engine then yeah..

 

Agin I wuold pass to meny what if's patience is the key if you really want a good 8 you can enjoy.

 

I'd save up a little longer if i were you. Try to find one with less mileage 6-spd!! is lots of fun compared to auto. plus our motor isnt inexpensive to rebuild esp. if you dont have the tools and/or knowledge to do it.

 

how about I trade the RX8 in for a truck thats what I really need. The 8 is really a want to have its not needed. It looks great inside and out but I know some dealers Have no clue about these cars only myths and such.

 

why is everyone trading their cars to the dealer? you know that is where you will get the least trade in value, no matter how they make things look on paper.

 

I'd guess at the greater anonimity of being able to sell a car with known but undisclosed problems

 

point taken, usually the dealer is stuck with a vehicle once the paperwork is finished but on the downside the prices usually reflect a car that is in poor maintenance and mechanical condition so that they have little room to lose money on it. even if they do they make up for it in the sale/lease of a new vehicle.

i guess i just find it annoying that people throw away so much money going from one 'new' car to the next, paying close to a small fortune over the span of 10 years which could have paid for a nice starter home, instead of maxed out credit cards and psuedo worthless vehicles once they are actually "owned". but then again, used cars were initially new at some point, but i can't recall the last car i ever actually lost money on.

 

Some here I don't lose money on car trade/ sells I'm not going to ever buy a "new" car. I just think the 8 would be a foot in on a used new car trade in VS a 99 grand am that none of us really want.
