I can't find it again, but I came across a thread on here that was talking about flashing the pcm on these cars regularly. I am curious to know if there are any truth to this, and if so, what is the reasoning behind this?

 

In the literal definition of what your question is, no, flashing the ECU regularly is not needed, and there is no benefit. I expect that you are misunderstanding something though, and misapplying the terms.

If you mean reseting the sensor profiles, then yes, the ECU can benefit from period resetting, as if you have a sensor failing it will be detected easier.

If you mean actual ECU flashing, then unless the actual flash data has changed, then there is no benefit to reflashing. Mazda hasn't released a factory flash in quite a few years, so as long as you are on that latest flash, there is no need to keep reflashing it. If the flash IS changing, it would be changing from a tuning method, Cobb AccessPORT or MazdaEdit. In this case, you only reflash the ECU with the updated flash when you make a change that needs to be applied. Nothing that is based on time or regular intervals.

 

I am willing to bet your right, and that would make sense why I was having a hard time finding that thread again haha. Thank you for clearing that up for me. There are lots of new concepts for me that come with the ownership of this car, just trying to grasp them all so I can keep her running at full potential. Most likely how I got it a little backwards.

I'll search more into that, now that I know what I was ACTUALLY seeing.

 

Early on the S1 had to undergo a variety of re-flashes from Mazda, not sure what they did besides adjust OMP rates, but I have never heard of this applying to S2's
