Dragging/Grinding

i actually have a question, i bottomed out on a rock yesterday and now my car it making a dragging/grinding noise, cant really be heard from outside the car but on the inside it sounds loud. i got under the car and can see that the heat shield was scraped pretty badly, but i looked at the transmission and it looks like it was unaffected (meaning it was not touched no marks on it) the exhaust is not loose and i cant see anything broken at all. im wondering if by pushing the heat shield into the cat could cause this noise? i have no cel on but it sounds terrible in the car mainly at lower rpms and only when driving while giving it gas, once the clutch is depressed or in neutral I can rev it and it sounds normal. Any ideas?

Could be a lot of things depending on what you hit...and where.

Best would be heat shield rubbing...worst would be internal tranny/clutch damage

well the thing about it is i jacked up the car and the only thing that was touched by the rock was the heat shield and exhaust but the noise is a constant while on the gas, i dont see how i could have screwed up my tranny from not even hitting it.

its sounds like metal is being dragged when im giving the car gas, but the heat shield was bent a little bit.

If there is something rubbing it could be rubbing on the drive shaft when there is deflection from load...otherwise it shouldn't change with the clutch in or out.

Driveshaft speed is unrelated to engine speed. It will go up and down with vehicle speed....so a noise that is RPM dependant has to be transmission or clutch related. Is it noisy in neutral with the clutch out? In gear with clutch in?

It is possile to damage transmission internals with bottoming...but not easy. You should check your power plant frame to make sure it hasn't shifted as well

well the only time it will make the noise is when im driving. nothing under the car cosmetically looks damaged besides where the heat shield is, and the way the rock was hit it was at low speeds so it more dragged under the car rather than just straight bottoming out. but it is only when giving it gas regardless of what gear im in, and only when moving.

Did you check the brakes and axle areas to make sure you don't have something stuck that is rubbing when the vehicle moves?

This would be more common...and easily fixed

grinding/dragging update help?

ok so long story short bottomed out on a rock on a dirt road and started hearing a grinding/dragging metal on metal kind of noise but only while driving in gear while giving it gas. looked under the car, the cat was the only area with any type of cosmetic damage. put the car on a lift, I can see that the heat shield was bent in and even had a small hole in it but cannot see if it also affected the cat, but I do not think so since the exhaust does not sound any louder. however the metal plate bar under the exhaust looked bent a tad bit so I bent it out best I could without taking it off, seem to have made it a bit better, but now I only hear the noise when I let off the gas while in gear and am de exceling, I do have a light weight flywheel and stage one, but I have never heard it make this noise before. basically what im asking, is there anyway for the cat to be causing this or is this a clutch or tranny problem? any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
