rx8 Loud whine "Normal???" See Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDYvM...ature=youtu.be

Is this normal??? It is SUPER LOUD. To The point it hurts my ears. Really high pitched.
I didn't hear this when I first got the car. Also today for the first time the temperature gauge went past the middle and all the way about half way to the hot end.

From what i have seen from trying to search about this it is the air pump but I am just trying to confirm.

Thanks

Sounds like the air pump. Pull the electrical connector and see if the sound stops.

Yeah, that isn't normal. Looks like the air pump solenoid failing. Disconnect the plug to the pump as a temporary solution. Will slightly reduce your cat's lifespan while disconnected, and will throw a CEL.

If the coolant temp needle moves at all, it's already in danger territory. I highly recommend a cooling system overhaul ASAP. You may have already done damage to the engine. Radiator, coolant lines, thermostat, and coolant bottle.

At RIWWP. I will try your suggestion. Would removing the cat and replacing with pipe be cheaper/easier? Also When I was on a long stretch of road towards the end of my daily drive today the coolant needle went back down. Also today it was about 95-102 F here in Colorado. The hottest it has been since I have had the car. I Just turned on the car and it turned fine. I have had some weird Idling nothing too bad only when the AC is on it can get really bad but I am thinking it is the plugs"If you are parked you hear a click come on and off like the fan or something and that is when the idle drops and it trys to compensate. Anyways about the temp issue ... Maybe it just needs a Coolant Flush?

Guys it seems it is intermittent now on the airpump whine. The air pump I am getting the dealer to see it and get a warranty replacement.

Also my temp gauge never went up today "same heat and same distance driving today.

Also I ordered new coils plugs and wires. On the carfax it says last time those were replaced was 15k miles

Your problems are not cat related. You could replace the cat, swap it with a midpipe, etc... and none of your problems would change. You have a cooling system problem and a failing air pump solenoid.

The click you hear when idling and the corresponding dip in revs is entirely normal, that is your fans coming on and the electrical load increase on the alternator slows the engine down briefly.

If you just keep driving it hoping you don't overheat you WILL lose your engine. The temp climbing even once means something in your cooling system is failing. A coolant flush may help, but there is something else causing it. Thermostat failing, radiator blockage, coolant line blockage, cap failure, or bottle failure. Ignore it at your peril.

I see your point on the cooling system. Is there a test I can have them do to test the water pump and the suction of the coolant? If that is good then it would most likley be a radiator blockage I am guessing? The fluid is at the full line and not leaking so I know there is not a leak.

The only 2 coolant tests I'm aware of test for a leak and/or coolant seal failure.

If you have a blockage somewhere, there is no test I'm aware of that tests for it. If you are over 60,000 miles, I would honestly just replace it all. From Mazmart, a brand new OEM radiator is under $200, thermostat is $65, hoses are probably around $100-$150, coolant bottle and cap is $130. Not all that expensive to ensure your cooling system is good to go for the next 60k-90k. I don't normally advocate just throwing parts at it, but it is really just maintenance at that mileage.

Mazmart could probably also get you a replacement solenoid for cheaper than the dealer.

You haven't noted mileage or model year, so I don't know how much of this might apply to you.

Yeah. At that age, you need to replace them as preventative maintenance anyway. They don't last forever
