How many quarts of oil in the Rx8?

I just purchased a 2004 Mazda Rx8 and it is due to an oil change. I wanted to know how many quarts of oil i have to put. I dont want to put to much to flood the engine and damage it.

Drain the oil....and put the plug back in....

Add 4 quarts...start the car..let it idle for a few minutes....then on level ground check the oil level...you will need to add a bit more ( usually)...maybe 1/2 to a full quart depending on how much you managed to drain out

There will be now way to damage your car that way..and you can always add a bit more oil if you are low the first time. Overfilling is a lot more difficult to fix....

You cannot flood the engine if you put too much oil. But to answer your question: it has seven quarts if you have dual oil coolers, but you'll only get five quarts at the most. I'm sure you don't know that the engine burns up oil, so you will get less than four quarts when you drain it from the oil drain plug. It's impossible to drain all seven by emptying it through the oil pan yourself. But, if you are in doubt, dispense four quarts then monitor it in your oil-dip-stick and add accordingly. Take the time to search the forum using the words: New and Potential Owner... It will answer most of your questions about the car if you haven't researched anything about the RX-8 prior to your purchase.

dannobre, beat me by a few seconds!

It's mileage based, not time based. If you never drive the 8, you can expect to use no oil at all.

If you drive it 50,000 miles a year, you will use a lot.

And depends on driving habits. My wife used a quart every 1500-2000 miles. I burn a quart every 1000 miles. Sometimes less.

Yep, depends on load. During our Texas8 runs I would use 1 quart in 150 miles of canyon running. All high RPM driving of course. Same thing for the track guys.

Oil change on an idle car?

So I've had my RX-8 just hanging out in my driveway for a few months waiting for a sale. The last oil change was in June but it hasn't been driven much since August (like maybe 10 miles since then). Does anyone know if I should take it in for an oil change?
Thanks!
