I'm new to the forum, so far I've found lots of good information!
Missing one thing although:
I like to drain the gas tank and found the procedure in the service manual. The manual states that the F/P terminal should be grounded. I think I found the right connector, but what pin should be grounded? I don't feel comfortable just choosing one by chance...
Anybody tried the procedure??

Just put a screw driver or something in to jumper the 2 wire pins in that plug...they are male and stick up and it will makke the fuel pump run with the key on and the engine off

 

Have you actually tried this? Not to be critical but it's not according to the instruction...

 

Yes....otherwise I wouldn't have said anything. Mine is an 04 thought.....

 

Excellent. I am just rebuilding a 04 that I bought and it has sat for a while. Will try this tomorrow!

 

Did this end up working? Needing to do this, and wanted to see if the method of just jumpering out the connector was successful in draining the tank. Thanks!

 

Thank you. That works. I posted some pictures.

 

I drained my tank using the same method however it only drained the pump side. I undid the other side and the fuel was full.

I initially thought that the diverter valve was faulty and tried another pump and it still would not drain the other side either.

Ended up putting fresh fuel on the empty side and started the car. Any ideas on why it did not drain both sides.

 

For some reason the siphon wasn't working. ..was the siphon line connected?

 

Yes the siphon is connected and cannot see any kinks

 

The siphon only works if there's enough backpressure to make the pressure relief bypass blow off; the siphon is on the pressure relief bypass circuit. You could maybe put a piece of hose across the center inside the tank over to the other side and do the old huff&puff manual siphon method to transfer it over, but you still won't get it 100% empty.

Awesome! This is good info! I just got a rx8 at a auction. And need to drain the gas out of it. Just one other question since I am a new member and cant post a thread yet. I just took it for a quick drive and had smoke coming out the center console. A mechanic friend also came buy to look at it. It smelled electricel but couldnt find any wires that look burnt. The drive shaft is rusted from where we ripped the center out. Could that be the cause of it? Also the heat shield around the cat is pretty rusted wondering if I am getting smoke just from all the Rust where the car has been sitting since only God and the auction house knows when lol

 

Rust doesn't smoke. Is the center or the passenger floor hot? It's not unheard of for clogged cats to heat up that area and sometimes start a fire.

The driveshaft is rusted? You can't see the driveshaft from inside the car even with the console out.

How does it drive other? You have a lot of reading up to do. I assume you don't know the history of the car?
